Good news came for former Tennessee baseball product Garrett Crochet on July 6, as he was named to his second MLB All-Star Game.

Crochet — who allowed two runs with seven strikeouts across five innings for the Boston Red Sox in a 6-4 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday — earned his second All-Star nod amid a dominant campaign so far in his first season with his new team.

Crochet was a part of the players’ vote, which is conducted after the fan vote decides the starters for both the American and National League. Crochet trailed only Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal among pitchers voted on by players.

The former No. 11 overall pick has a 9-4 record this season with a 2.39 ERA and an MLB-leading 151 strikeouts in 120â…“ innings pitched after being traded from the Chicago White Sox for multiple high-end prospects during the offseason. Crochet signed a six-year, $170 million contract extension with the Red Sox after they acquired the former Vol.

The 6-foot-6 left-hander from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, started 11 games as a freshman for Tennessee, turning in a 5.51 ERA in 63â…” innings. He improved to a 4.02 ERA as a sophomore in 2019.

Crochet hardly pitched during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season due to injury, but he still positioned himself to be one of the top prospects of the 2020 MLB Draft. He was the highest pick in Vols history before Chase Dollander went No. 9 overall to the Colorado Rockies in 2023 and Christian Moore went No. 8 overall to the Los Angeles Angels in 2024.

Crochet started his career in the bullpen for the White Sox, being called up the same year he was drafted in 2020. After battling injuries during the next few seasons, he transitioned into a starting role for the first time in 2024 and emerged as one of the top starting pitchers in MLB.

Now a bona fide MLB ace, the former Vol is poised to have quite the career as he’s still 26 years old.
