2025 MLB Draft Preview: Mitch Voit scouting report

The 2025 MLB Draft is less than a week away — the first round kicks off on July 13, 2025 — so its time to start offering capsule looks at players the Texas Rangers could select with their top picks. The Rangers’ first round pick is at #12, their second round pick is at #52, and their third round pick is at #84.

Leading up to draft day, we will be doing writeups of some of the players who could end up getting selected by the Rangers with one of their first three picks. Today we are looking at University of Michigan second baseman Mitch Voit.

Mitch Voit is a 6’0”, 201 lb. righthanded hitting second baseman at the University of Michigan. Undrafted out of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, Voit both pitched and played in the field his first two years at Michigan, but underwent internal brace surgery last summer and didn’t pitch in 2025. He turns 21 at the end of September.

Voit has taken a significant step forward this season with the bat, which reports suggest may be due to his focusing solely on hitting this season and not pitching. He gets quality marks for his contact ability and has greatly improved his plate discipline in 2025. He is hit-over-power currently, though he projects for average power long term, and his swing is geared towards putting the ball in the air.

Voit has played all over the field for Michigan, spending most of his freshman season at third base when he wasn’t pitching, playing first base and the corner outfield spots as a sophomore, and manning second base as a junior. He has the speed to potentially get a look at center field, which would make him an option at all three outfield spots, and he also could fit at either second base or third base long term.

As a freshman, Voit slashed .267/.338/.439 with 18 walks against 50 Ks in 211 plate appearances over 54 games. He showed improved power as a sophomore, slashing .292/.373/.572 in 269 plate appearances, doubling his home run total from 7 to 14, though with 61 Ks against 23 walks. As a junior, he showed a huge improvement in his walks and Ks, walking more times (40) than he struck out (34) while slashing .346/.471/.668 in 261 plate appearances, with 14 homers and 14 stolen bases.

Baseball America has Voit at #231 on their top 500 list. MLB Pipeline’s draft rankings have Voit at #63. Keith Law’s top 100 list has Voit at #54. Kiley McDaniel’s top 150 list has Voit at #66. Fangraphs does not have Voit on their board.

Voit’s draft stock has risen significantly over the course of a 2025 season that saw him establish himself as one of the best hitters in the Big 10. I’m sure scouts would prefer a longer track record of performing at this level — however, with this being the first time he’s just been a position player, some may view him as having even more potential upside as he continues to spend more of his time working on his hitting.

The Big 10 isn’t known for its high level of baseball, and so there are going to be questions about how well Voit will be able to handled more talented pitchers. However, as an option in the second round as a guy who has some defensive utility and speed to go with his bat, Voit would seem to be a potential fit for Texas.
