Richard Fitts feels like he’s on a rollercoaster. There have been highs and lows. Peaks & valleys. Thrills and disappointments. In 12 major league starts with the Boston Red Sox, he’s suffered from a lack of run support, a leaky bullpen and also suffered a pectoral injury that put him on the injured list earlier this season.
Monday night against the Colorado Rockies everything came together. Fitts wicked slider mystified the Rockies. The former Auburn Tiger and former Helena Husky went 5.2 innings, striking out six. The Red Sox also gave Fitts plenty of run support. The Red Sox beat the Rockies 9-3, giving Fitts his first major league victory.
“I’ve been waiting a while for it,” Fitts said. “But just in the sense of it’s been a long lifetime just to get to the big leagues. This is a big accomplishment for me, but hopefully it’s the first of many for me and it’s not even a big accomplishment for me, but in the sense of the whole team clicked today. We’ve been having fun. We’ve been having fun for a few days. We want to keep that rolling. If I can keep doing that on the days that I pitch, then I think we’re in good shape.”
The win was the fourth straight victory for the Red Sox.
