LINCOLN – Norfolk Elkhorn Valley Bank picked up their second shutout win in as many games yesterday, downing Vermeer High Plains (Lincoln Southeast) 11-0 thanks in part to seven runs in the fifth inning.

During that inning, Maddox Magnussen and Aidan Phillips each drew walks to score a run; an error scored a run; Burkley Schroeter singled to score two runs; and one more run came across on a Landon Viergutz single.

Norfolk was able to draw first blood with a run in the first inning thanks to one of three errors committed by Vermeer High Plains.

Norfolk would tack on two more runs in the top of the second inning thanks to a Chris Schwede ground out and a Jay Anderson single to center field. They’d add another run in the fourth off a Schroeter ground out.

Landon Kassmeier earned the win for Norfolk after scattering five hits with three walks and a strikeout in the complete game effort.

Burke Winter began the game for Vermeer High Plains, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout over four innings worked.

Norfolk amassed 10 hits in the game, with Viergutz, Anderson and Schroeter each collecting two of them. Schroeter also led Norfolk with three RBIs in the contest on a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

Viergutz, Brody Kassmeier and Braydan Koozer each swiped multiple bags in the contest as the team amassed eight stolen bases on the day; their defense was able to turn two double-plays, including a game-ender with runners on the corners in the fifth.

Winter, Kaden Higgins, Cooper Clements, Ryne Olson and Breck Waybright each had one hit for Vermeer High Plains, with Clements stealing two bases in the process.

Norfolk will have today off before traveling back to Lincoln for another make-up contest, this time with Ayars & Ayars (Lincoln Northeast) Wednesday at 5.
