Right-handed pitcher Trey Gibson of the Chesapeake Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for June 30 to July 6, Minor League Baseball announced. The recognition highlights Gibson’s standout performance during a seven-inning complete game shutout against Richmond on July 2.
Gibson, the Orioles’ No. 14 prospect, pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six in his first career complete game. The performance marked the first seven-inning complete game by a Baysox pitcher since Justin Armbruester in June 2023. Over five starts with the Baysox, Gibson has maintained a 2.05 ERA across 26.1 innings, showcasing his command and strikeout ability.

The 23-year-old Virginia native signed with the Orioles as an undrafted free agent in August 2023 out of Liberty University. Promoted to Double-A Chesapeake from High-A Aberdeen on June 3, Gibson has adapted quickly to the higher level. His 98 strikeouts this season between High-A and Double-A lead all Orioles minor leaguers and tie for the 10th most in Minor League Baseball, underscoring his dominance on the mound.
“Trey Gibson delivered a masterful performance, showing why he’s a top prospect,” said a Chesapeake Baysox spokesperson. Gibson joins teammate Nestor German, who earned the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honor on June 16, as the second Baysox pitcher recognized this season. The award reflects the strength of the Orioles’ pitching development at the Double-A level.
Gibson’s journey to Double-A is notable, given his undrafted status. After a challenging 2023 college season at Liberty, where he was suspended for undisclosed reasons, Gibson pitched in the Cape Cod League, catching the Orioles’ attention. His mid-90s fastball, combined with a slider and curveball, has drawn praise from prospect analysts. Baseball America noted his strong 7-foot extension and breaking pitches, positioning him as a pitcher to watch in 2025
The Chesapeake Baysox rebranded from the Bowie Baysox in November 2024, plays at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland. The team’s nine-game homestand continues on July 8 at 6:35 p.m. against the Reading Fightin’ Phils, the Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Baysox, part of the Eastern League, has a history of developing talent, with former players like Adley Rutschman and Grayson Rodriguez advancing to the majors.
Gibson’s recent performance adds to his growing reputation. In 2024, he posted a 3.72 ERA between Low-A Delmarva and High-A Aberdeen, striking out 11.5 batters per nine innings. His transition to Double-A has been seamless, with 31 strikeouts in 26.1 innings and a 0.99 WHIP. The Orioles’ tandem starter program has helped Gibson build velocity, contributing to his higher-level success.
Minor League Baseball determines the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week award based on weekly performances across the league. Gibson’s shutout against Richmond stood out for its efficiency, with only two baserunners allowed—one via a fielding error and one via a single. His ability to limit walks and generate strikeouts has bolstered the Baysox’s rotation, which includes other promising arms like Nestor German and Levi Wells.
As the Baysox continue their season, Gibson’s development remains a focal point for the Orioles’ organization, known for nurturing pitching talent. Fans attending the homestand can expect to see Gibson and other prospects in action, with the team aiming to build on its 23-21 record in the Eastern League Southwest division.
