Four straight losses with an average of fewer than two runs per game since Friday. You know how they say in the movies that it can’t get any worse right before it does? Well, that applies to the current Dodgers situation, as they’ll be facing one of the more promising rookies in the sport, Jacob Misiorowski.

To understand what makes Misiorowski so intriguing, you start by acknowledging he is kind of a unicorn on the mound. Standing at 6’7″, Misiorowski has outrageous extension, which helps play up the velocity on all of his pitches, already in the 99th percentile among starters, averaging over 99 MPH on his fastball and 94+ on his slider.

The short version is that people simply don’t string many hits off him, and Misiorowski’s primary issue is one that’s more common to young pitchers than anything he does on the mound: consistent command. All of this is properly displayed by his 0.915 WHIP and 13.3-percent walk rate.

Lacking the usual thump with both Max Muncy and Teoscar Hernández on the shelf, the Dodgers look a little more vulnerable than usual. At the same time, often what you need is a bit of perspective, and even far from 100 percent, this lineup has more than enough talent to handle whatever comes this way (even if they haven’t showed it recently). Think of it like this, the Milwaukee team that just beat Los Angeles has not a single player with an .800 OPS or higher. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have five, even with all of their injuries, Hyesong Kim being the only non-qualified hitter of the bunch, having appeared in 43 games.

Speaking of scoring runs, that hasn’t been a problem with Clayton Kershaw on the mound. Since his return, Kershaw has received incredible run support with the offense scoring six-plus runs per game in his nine outings. In the age-old question of immovable object against unstoppable force, who’ll cave first? The Dodgers’ recent run of poor offensive performances or their propensity to score a lot when Kershaw is on the mound?
