Tonight, the Colorado Rockies (21-70) will play the Boston Red Sox (47-45) in the second of a three-game series at Fenway Park.
The Rockies have gone 14-16 all-time against the Red Sox. In addition, they have won each of the last two series against the club, taking two of three at Coors Field in 2024 and two of three at Fenway Park in 2023. For that streak to continue, they will need to win tonight.
In terms of making dubious history, the Rockies’ 70 losses are the second-most prior to the All-Star break behind the 2024 White Sox (27-71), and the 2025 Rockies and 2024 White Sox are the only teams to lose at least 70 games prior to the break.Colorado’s 70 losses through its first 91 games are tied with the 1907 St. Louis Cardinals and 1911 Boston Red Sox for the second-most in the modern era behind the 1916 Philadelphia Phillies (19-71).
Starting for the Rockies is Kyle Freeland. This will be his 17th start of the season, his ninth on the road. He is the second pitcher in franchise history to have nine seasons with 10+ starts, joining Aaron Cook (2003-11). Four of his last five starts have been quality starts with a team-leading eight quality starts this season.
The lefty has a 5.94 ERA in 83.2 IP. He’s struck out 61 and walked 20, and given up nine home runs. Freeland has a 1.58 WHIP.
Tonight, Freeland will be facing his former teammate, Trevor Story.
Taking the mound for the Red Sox will be RHP Brayan Bello.
Currently, he has an ERA of 3.42 in 76.1 IP. He’s struck out 55 while giving up 33 walks and eight home runs with a 1.38 WHIP.
Has allowed three ER or fewer in 12 of his 13 starts this season, including each of his last seven. Bello has recorded quality starts in each of his last five outings, his second-longest career streak (seven QS from 6/5-7/14/23).
Particularly notable, Bello has held opponents to a .215 AVG with RISP this year (14-for-65, 11 BB, 13 SO) including a .172 AVG with RISP and 2 outs (5-for-29, 5 BB, 7 SO).
