SAN DIEGO — The Arizona Diamondbacks scratched one of their starters shortly before first pitch for the second straight game, removing center fielder Alek Thomas from the lineup on Tuesday against the San Diego Padres.

The club said Thomas dealt with right knee soreness and is considered day-to-day.

Jake McCarthy moved from designated hitter to center field, while Randal Grichuk entered the batting order as the new DH against Padres right-hander Nick Pivetta.

Thomas made a potential game-saving catch at the warning track in Monday’s 6-3 win, sliding to take extra bases away from San Diego’s Jackson Merrill during the ninth inning.

Second baseman Ketel Marte returned on Tuesday after he was removed from the lineup on Monday. He dealt with right groin tightness and was also considered day-to-day by the team.

“I think (Marte is) in a good spot,” manager Torey Lovullo said pregame on Tuesday. “Yesterday was a day where he tried to go out there and push it a little bit in pregame and just felt a little discomfort. … But he wants to play, he’s back in there today.  I know he is out there very eagerly testing it and hoping that it’ll pass all his personal tests.”
