The NL’s saves leader is an All-Star after all.
Robert Suarez was named to the National League team on Tuesday as an injury replacement for Braves ace Chris Sale. The addition gives the Padres’ four total representatives and two from a bullpen that ranks fourth in the majors in ERA.
“I mean, we got four guys down there that if you put any of their names in the All Star Game,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said after Jason Adam’s selection on Sunday, “you’d say, yeah, it makes perfect sense.”
In a traditional sense, Suarez might make the most sense.
Closers, after all, tend to get all the glory and Suarez’s 25 saves are tied for the most in the majors with former Padres closer Josh Hader and five more than the next-best closer in the National League.
Suarez is 25-for-28 in save chances and had his resume docked by a handful of blow-ups in his last 10 appearances (12.27 ERA), taking his ERA from 1.78 on June 9 to 3.82 heading into Tuesday’s game.
This is Suarez’s second All-star invite. He’ll join Adam, starting third baseman Manny Machado and reserve outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. on Sunday’s trip to Atlanta.
