DUBOIS — Coming off an emotional extra-inning victory late Monday night, the DuBois Senior League All-Star baseball team found itself in another dogfight Tuesday afternoon against South Williamsport in a winner’s bracket matchup at the Glen Fiebig Memorial Pennsylvania State Tournament at Stern Field.

That extra-inning affair meant DuBois had to go deeper into its pitching staff earlier than it would have liked too, and a trio of pitchers did their best to battle to keep the host team the contest. Ultimately, it was the offense that won the game as DuBois knocked off the Section 3 champions in a slugfest, 13-10, to reach tonight’s winner’s bracket finals.

It was a true back-and-forth battle, with the lead changing hands five times in a game that featured four half inning where the teams scored four or more runs. DuBois, which outhit South Williamsport, 19-10, had the last of those big inning — pushing four runs across in the bottom of the sixth to turn a one-run deficit into a three-run lead at 13-10.

Seth Wilmoth then finished off the win with a quiet top of the seventh, working around a two-out single by Garrett Lorson. Wilmoth gave DuBois a gutsy relief effort as his team’s third pitcher of the day.

Wilmoth, who got DuBois out of a tough spot in the third, tossed five innings to earn the win. He allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out five.

All five runs against the righty came in the fifth as the Section 3 champs went back up 10-9 at the time. Otherwise, Wilmoth kept the South Williamsport offense pretty quiet, retiring seven of the last batters of the game.

DuBois didn’t hang their heads after that inning though and responded with its big four-run bottom of the sixth to go back on top for good.

Bryson Kail jump-started that rally with a leadoff double to right. He scored two batters later on a Brody Knouse single to left with one out to tie the game. Knouse promptly stole second before Isaac Dennison walked.

Nate Witherite then smacked a RBI single to plate Knouse before capitalized on a South Williamsport miscue o go up 12-10. Special pinch runner Easton Harris strayed too far off third as South Williamsport threw back to the pitcher when Witherite took off for second.

Howvever, an errant throw to third by pitcher Cade Lusk was off the mark, allowing Harris to score and Witherite to reach third. Wilmoth then helped his own cause with a single to center to score Witherite to make it 13-10.

All told, DuBois had seven of its nine starters collect at least two hits.

Kail was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Knouse was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Both players scored twice. Teammate Wes Clyde led all players in hits, as he went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored out of the leadoff spot.

Jack Statler, Evan Burton, Witherite and London Duncan each had two hits, with Burton smacking a double and Witherite driving in a run.

Next up for DuBois is a showdown with Section 7 champ Newville tonight, with a berth in the state championship game at stake. Newville reached the winner’s bracket final with a 15-0, 4-inning win against Oil City in Tuesday’s opening game.

“The biggest thing was the offense,” said DuBois manager Tim Kail. “I’ve been telling these guys … we need a game where we hit, hit, hit. I kept telling them last night (Monday vs. Mid-Valley) you keep popping up and practice line drives. And, they finally caught on.

“The one thing about them, and you saw it (Monda) night. They don’t give up. I’ve been following this team since T-Ball. They want it and will be here to fight for it. It’s just one game a time now and see what happens tomorrow.”

South Williamsport threatened right out of the gate in the top of the first, loading the bases with none out against DuBois starter Carter Genevro on a Lusk double and a pair of walks.

The Section 3 champs then tried a squeeze play, but Jax Miller didn’t make contact on his bunt attempt as Lusk raced home. DuBois catcher Isaac Dennison fielded the pitch and dove back to the plate to tag out Lusk for the second out.

Genevro then got Miller to pop up to end the inning and strand a pair of runners in scoring position.

DuBois promptly grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the inning.

Clyde ripped a leadoff single, then stole second and went to third when the through went into center field. Kail scored Clyde on a groundout for a 1-0 advantage.

DuBois took that lead to third when South Williamsport erupted for five runs on just three hits against three pitchers for the host team — a rally aided by three walks — to take a 5-1 lead.

Cole Gerber and Chance Quimby each had RBI singles in the inning, with DuBois also cutting down a run at the plate as special pinch runner Judah Butler tried to scored a second run on Quimby’s bunt single

Perhaps the inning woke up DuBois a little, as it answered right back with a huge seven-run bottom of the third that saw DuBois collect nine hits while sending 13 batters to the plate.

Clyde plate the first of those runs with an infield single, then Kail belted a two-run double to left-center. Knouse added a two-run single in the frame, with Clyde capping the rally with his second run-scoring single of the inning. That put DuBois back up 8-5.

DuBois tacked on a ninth run in the fourth when Evan Burton hit a leadoff single and later scored on a Dennison groundout.

That four-run advantage proved to be short-lived though, as South Williamsport responded with a five-run top of the fifth that featured five hits.

Back-to-back doubles by Miller and Camden Hannen produced the first run, while Lusk had a RBI single and Jaymes Carpenter a two-run single to make to give South Williamsport a 10-9 lead. Lusk was 3-for-5 with a double and RBI.

Lusk, who came on in relief in the third, just couldn’t hold the DuBois offense at bay though as the host team continued to battle and put up that four-spot in the sixth to win the game.
