WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) is set to hold its first-ever tryouts this August, bringing more than 600 top female athletes to Nationals Park and the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy for a chance to earn their spot in the league’s 2026 debut season.
For the first time in more than 80 years, women from across the country will take the field to chase a professional baseball dream. The WPBL is hosting its official tryouts Aug. 22–25 in the heart of the nation’s capital.
More than 600 players have already registered to showcase their skills — and the tryout form is still open. The four-day event kicks off with drills and evaluations at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, leading up to a live game under the lights at Nationals Park on Monday, Aug. 25.

Spearheading the tryouts is Team USA legend Alex Hugo, joined by league co-founder Dr. Justine Siegal, the first woman to coach in Major League Baseball. After tryouts wrap up, 150 players will be selected for the league’s inaugural draft in October, ahead of its six-team season debuting in spring 2026.
This marks the first women’s professional baseball league since 1943, when the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) broke ground during World War II. Created to keep baseball alive while male players served overseas, the league ran for 12 seasons before folding in 1954, as Major League Baseball resumed full operations and fan interest shifted. The AAGPBL famously inspired the film “A League of Their Own” — and now, more than eight decades later, the game is back on.
