Ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the Chicago Cubs have a chance to make some major additions to the roster. The most pressing need is in the starting rotation, and the Cubs are already scouring the market for their new starter.

However, a major question remains: how far will the Cubs go in the trade market? According to former MLB general manager Jim Bowden in The Athletic, the Cubs aren’t going to back down in the trade market.

“I get the impression the Cubs are ‘all-in’ to win this year,” Bowden writes, “And will trade (Owen) Caissie or (Kevin) Alcantara if that lands them the right pitcher(s).”

If the Cubs are willing to part with their top prospects, the starting pitching options they can land become much more interesting. Mitch Keller is one starter the team is interested in, while Sandy Alcantara is also of interest.

Even with the potential departures of Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki in the offseason, the Cubs are willing to part with their top prospects if they can land the top options on their trade board.

Jed Hoyer and the Cubs are ready to go “all-in” this season. With the third-best offense in baseball according to OPS (.779), it’s no surprise the Cubs view this season as one to be aggressive.

While the offense is good, the pitching staff needs bolstering. Justin Steele is out for the year, and after Jameson Taillon’s injury, the need in the rotation became a lot more dire.

Adding a strong third starter behind Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd would be the perfect trade deadline addition for a team looking to compete for the World Series.

Less than a month from the MLB trade deadline, the Cubs are in second place in the National League and 2.5 games up in the NL Central. Between the potent offense and reported willingness to go “all-in,” the Cubs making a major trade deadline splash is possible.
