SIOUX FALLS – The Brookings Cubs lost 4-1 to the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels in an amateur baseball game on Wednesday night.
Neither team scored the first two innings and then the Flying Squirrels scored four runs over the next three innings.
Zach Dibble was hit by a pitch with one in the bottom of the third. He then stole second and scored on a single from Trevor Hurley to make it 1-0.
Sioux Falls scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jaden Holzer reached on an error with one out and Christian Rasmusson followed with a single. Two batters later Dibble hit both runners home with a single to make it 3-0.
Trevor Hurley and Connor Hurley each hit singles to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Trevor Hurley would then score on a single from Holzer to make it 4-0 heading into the sixth.
Brookings lone run came in the top of the seventh. Lincoln Vasgaard hit a lead-off double and then scored on an Arlen Peters single to make it 4-1. Myles Rees hit a two-out double in the eighth but that was the Cubs’ only runner the rest of the way.
The Cubs had eight hits in the loss. Peters was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Parker Winghart was 2-for-4. Rees was 1-for-3 and Rhett Zelinsky, Chase McDaniel and Vasgaard were each 1-for-4.
Zach Shastay started the game for the Cubs and pitched six innings. He gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Vasgaard and McDaniel each pitched one inning. Vasgaard gave up no runs or hits and had one strikeout and two walks. McDaniel gave up no runs or hits and had one walk and no strikeouts.
The Cubs are 9-4 on the season and will host the Baltic River Dawgs on Monday at 7:30 p.m.Â
