Spencer McKercher: Are we welcome in the Legends Phillies legend Chase Utley, sitting in beautiful Lake Tahoe getting ready for the American Century championship chase one. How you doing, man? You look great. The setting looks great. How’s everything going?
Chase Utley: Yeah. I mean, how do you how do you beat the environment? Everything’s gone. Fantastic. We just got off the course to have a practice round. The course is playing great. Slightly challenging on the greens, but all is good. I’m doing well and just happy to be up here at Lake Tahoe at the American Center and Championship.
Spencer McKercher: How about it, man? And it’s the biggest of the country’s most prominent athletes and celebrities. It’s a huge golf tournament. There’s a lot of big names in this tournament. We’ll start with that. Obviously, you got guys like Jason Kelce, Charles Barkley, then you have former teammates like Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, Steph Curry’s there. Then you have Miles Teller and Rob McElhenney. How are you feeling going in here?
Chase Utley: I want to say I feel like we have a strong Philly contingent. Obviously Jimmy and Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino. Jayson Werth, they’re here. Then you add on Miles and Rob. That’s, you know, that’s six of us from Philadelphia plus Charles. You know I like our chances.
Spencer McKercher: I like that and like you said, big Philly contingency there. Maybe next year we can bring it towards here. Obviously, we just had the troops open in Philly. Maybe next year you can talk to these guys and maybe bring it here, huh? Yeah.
Chase Utley: I feel like you should make it work. And you guys should come out here for yourself.
Sean Kane: Can chase question for you. Yeah. How is the golf game? I know. Living in England, have you gotten to play a lot? Have you played any of the great historic courses over that way in England? Scotland? Just curious how much you’ve been able to play.
Chase Utley: Yeah, the games. Okay. You know, there’s some good shots in there, but there’s still unfortunately, too many bad shots. But to answer your question, I was lucky enough to make some friends that were golfers when we were in London. So, yeah, I spent probably played a good 20 rounds or so up in Scotland and hit all the it all the great ones played in the St Andrews area.
Chase Utley: Obviously St Andrews, but a few of the other ones went to Royal Dornoch, Northern and Scotland, which was an amazing course. You know, went to Aberdeen, we were down right below Edinburgh. So yeah, we made our rounds around Scotland and, and if you haven’t done it it’s something that’s, that is definitely put on the bucket list because Scotland golf there’s nothing like it, You’re kind of out in the terrain, you’re exposed to the elements. Some days are 72 degrees and sunny, some days are 55 and sideways wind. So you never know what you’re going to deal with. But the experience is phenomenal.
Spencer McKercher: Now, Chase, you’re currently the favorite among all the Philly athletes. You’re 200 to 1 win Jimmy 300 to 1, Werth is 250 to 1 and Shane is 350 to 1. Is there any pressure?
Chase Utley: No, no pressure. I mean, no pressure whatsoever with us. I’ve noticed that Shane, at least on Instagram, is playing a lot of golf, so I’m not sure those odds are totally accurate. I know Jayson was playing a lot of golf prior to him getting into that into the horse world, so I’m not sure how much he’s playing these days and I imagine is playing quite a bit.
Chase Utley: So yeah, it’ll be a good competition amongst the four of us and we’ll see. We’ll see who comes out to. I think I was maybe I last year I snuck out on top. We’ll see how it goes this year.
Spencer McKercher: I love that. I love that. And now just one last golf question, then we’ll get into the Phil’s this season. What current Philly would you want to play with that would guarantee you to win a scramble in this tournament or any tournament? What current Philly would you want to golf with?
Chase Utley: I mean who play? I don’t know who plays golf.
Spencer McKercher: JT is unreal.
Chase Utley: Okay, well then, JT, no brainer. Yeah, You know, that’s my guy for sure.
Spencer McKercher: Yeah, I like that. I like that.
Sean Kane: Speaking of the current team, the current Phil Chase, I don’t know how much you’ve been able to watch as we get close to the all star break here Right. Currently tied with the Mets but generally a pretty good first half of the season really good starting pitching Just kind of your overview on what you’ve seen from the Phils. When are you able to watch them this year.
Chase Utley: Yeah. I mean, nothing has changed over the past few years. I mean, they have a strong team. They have an amazing offense. And like you said, the pitching staff is as dialed it up a bit, obviously, with Zack Wheeler leading the charge there. He’s it’s pretty special pitcher and really extremely fun to watch and not fun to face And obviously, as we all know, the offense is strong. So listen I like their chances as I’ve liked their chances the last few years. It’s all about timing and getting hot at the right time. And if they get hot at the right time, they have a wonderful chance to go where they want to go.
Spencer McKercher: I love that. And obviously we’re getting close to the trade deadline here. Chase, what do you think that this team should do? Obviously, we talked about the Zack Wheeler window possibly closing. He might have two years left. He talked about retirement after that contract expires. Are you willing for this team to kind of go all in? Obviously, they need some bullpen help. They need maybe another right handed bat a lineup. Are you going to give up the farm to kind to go all in here if you were Dave Dombrowski I’m unclear.
Chase Utley: Listen, I think they have a strong team as is. And I would imagine Dave DAVIES been doing this for a long time and he kind of knows how to add the right pieces at the right time. So I trust I would trust his judgment, especially in these times. And I know the ownership from ownership perspective. They want to win. So when you have those things, those two things aligned, usually good things happen.
Sean Kane: You Chase I got one more for you about the current team we just mentioned their starting pitching. Yeah, you know, you can relate to the stats you guys had in 2011 specifically, right.? But even before that, so many great pitchers. You know, I guess one, how do you compare kind of that group of Doc and Cliff and Cole and Roy Oswalt to the group they have now just as an everyday player? What a luxury it is. You know, pretty much every game sending one of those guys to the mound where they can kind of do it again this year with Zach and Granger and Christopher Sanchez and Aaron Nola when he’s healthy, just how big of a luxury is that having a guy that, you know, gives you a good chance to win pretty much every day?
Chase Utley: Yeah. I mean, start, you know, good starting pitching at the end of the day. Usually these good hitting. So having some strong starters on your team is only going to be beneficial. And yeah we had some amazing starters for us over the years and same with this current group. So yes they to start it from a starting pitching aspect, they’re in a good spot.
Spencer McKercher: Obviously your former teammate, best friend, one of your best friends on the team, Jimmy Rollins, is getting inducted in the Hall of Fame here in August. Yep. This year. Your perspective on that man, It’s a quite an honor. And are you a little jealous that he’s getting in before you?
Chase Utley: The one it is. It is an honor. It’s on so many amazing players that have come through Philadelphia. And Jimmy, in my opinion, I think in everyone’s opinion, deserves to be in the Phillies Hall of Fame. You know, the best shortstop ever to put on a Phillies uniform. He was, as you guys know, he was our sparkplug when he was there pretty much on a daily basis motivating us. And we kind of followed his lead. So I’m happy for him. I’m not jealous whatsoever. Maybe one day I’ll be in there, but I’m happy for Joe for now.
Sean Kane: I love that. In addition to Jimmy, they’re honoring Ed Wade too. And I think obviously you’re familiar with Ed, and he’s a guy that I think kind of flies under the radar when you talk about that nucleus that you guys had for all those years. He was the guy that kind of put you guys together, drafted yourself, drafted a lot of other guys. And, you know, he wasn’t there. When you finally reached the pinnacle. But I guess just your thoughts on the impact he had in kind of laying the foundation for those glory years that you were a part of?
Chase Utley: Yeah, I think he had a huge impact. Obviously, as you mentioned, we drafted age. I believe he drafted Ryan Howard, already drafted Jimmy Rollins. He drafted a bunch of the core guys that there were instrumental and in the kind of get into the team to where we wanted to go. So he’s definitely has a huge fingerprint on the success that we have and without with it that without Ed Wade, I’m not sure we would have been in the place. And we were.
Spencer McKercher: Also just a few more here. Chase Thanks for doing this too. So Sean Kane is our pre and post game producer for Phillies pre game live. Yeah we’re doing our quarter century team and we’re not going to give in is not going to give any spoilers away but right now there’s a good chance you’re going to be our starting second baseman.
Spencer McKercher: Where does that rank in terms of all your accolades? Where would that one rank for the NBC Sports Philadelphia quarter century Philly?
Chase Utley: Oh, I mean, it’s right up there. I think it’s right up there with any accolade you could possibly get. I appreciate the support. I hope the votes of you come in my way. But yes, it ranks up there quite high.
Sean Kane: Yeah, it’s a heavy, heavy weight group there at first stop. Yeah. We got, we got Scott roll to third base. So yeah, good job. We got some current guys. So it’s pretty good. But congrats on that honor.
Chase Utley: Yeah, you have a lot you have a lot to choose from. You can’t go wrong with anybody.
Sean Kane: Exactly. Exactly right. I do want to ask you about yourself personally. We know about, you know, the role you’ve had the last couple of years overseas for Major League Baseball. I guess everybody, especially everybody around here, is kind of waiting to see like, you know, what’s Jake’s going to do next, given that you’re such a, you know, a baseball guy, a baseball lifer.
Sean Kane: I know manager has been thrown around, coaching has been thrown around. Just what do you kind of envision for yourself? I know you still have your boys to raise, but what’s next for Chase Utley in terms of baseball?
Chase Utley: That’s a good question. My wife asked me that every other day. But to your point, yeah, I still have two young boys are ten and 13. I’ve really enjoyed watching them grow up, becoming little men, if you will. So that’s my main focus at this point. Obviously, I love baseball. I never get too far away from baseball, but time will tell. I’m not unclear what the immediate future looks like, but just know that I will stay in baseball in some capacity. So there.
Spencer McKercher: You go. And speaking of that, just your last question here. You’re ambassador in Europe for the Major League Baseball. Obviously, you and I were in London last year having a great time at that home run derby.
Chase Utley: Yeah.
Spencer McKercher: Is there anything new in the works with the ambassador to Europe? Is there obviously we had the London series last year. Is there anything possibly maybe next season fans can look out for?
Chase Utley: Yeah, we’re working on London season for next season, London series for next season as well. And again, I mean, we talked a little bit about it, but just trying to expose Europe to baseball because it’s not a national sport to their culture. And it’s you know, we’re slowly but surely we’re making an impact on just exposing it and getting people more aware of what the sport’s all about. And then now the next level, next step is to be able to play it a little bit more often. So yeah, we’re slowly chipping away and I’ve really enjoyed my role in doing that. We’ll see it. We’ll see what the future holds. Awesome.
Spencer McKercher: Awesome. Well, you can catch Chase Utley on Peacock starting in round one and Friday in the American Century Championship. And then he will be on NBC ten here in Philadelphia on Saturday, starting at 230. CHACE Best of luck out there. I hope everything goes well. I’m sure WILL.
Chase Utley: Thanks
Spencer McKercher: Thank dude, appreciate it.
