ST. LOUIS – Erick Fedde will stay in the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting rotation for at least one more start, despite prolonged struggles and speculation that the Cardinals could shake up their rotation before the All-Star break.

Fedde is set to take the mound Saturday against the Atlanta Braves, the Cardinals’ second-to-last game before their midseason break, according to reports Thursday from several Cardinals media members.

Fedde hasn’t won a game since May 9 and has a 5.70 ERA over his last 10 starts. Over his last three outings, Fedde has allowed 17 earned runs and only covered 10 innings. His recent struggles became magnified during a Sunday Night Baseball start against the division-leading Chicago Cubs, chased early after just four outs on 53 pitches, allowing three earned runs in an eventual blowout loss.

Following the start, Cardinals manager Oli Marmol told media members on Fedde, “He has to find a solution to what’s going on. … Continuing to go down this road doesn’t seem beneficial at the moment.”

The remarks initially suggested the Cardinals could shake up their rotation, possibly by calling up young arm Michael McGreevy or looking elsewhere from within.

Instead, the Cardinals reshuffled the rotation ahead of their final pre All-Star homestand, lining up Sonny Gray to make two more starts and giving Fedde and others an extra day of rest from their normal turn.

It’s unclear how much longer the Cardinals may turn to Fedde or fellow slumping starting pitcher Miles Mikolas (7.75 ERA over his last seven starts) as they stay close within the postseason picture. Mikolas’ final start before the break is set for Thursday.

Fedde, who the Cardinals acquired last year at the trade deadline in a deal involving Tommy Edman, could possibly see himself on the trade block in a few weeks as a pending free agent, so perhaps Saturday’s start will help the Cardinals further reevaluate his fit on the team going forward as the postseason hopes hang in the balance.

The Cardinals are 49-44 heading into Thursday’s series finale against the Washington Nationals. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. CT. The Cardinals will then host the Atlanta Braves for three games to close out the season’s unofficial first half.
