Major League Baseball’s worst team could be getting a familiar name if analysts’ predictions come true.

Several national draft writers are predicting that the Rockies, who own the No. 4 overall pick in the MLB draft, are going to use their pick to select Ethan Holliday. The 18-year-old shortstop and third baseman is the son of former Rockies all-star outfielder Matt Holliday. He is also the younger brother of former No. 1 overall pick and Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday.

The draft takes place July 13-14 in Atlanta. It’s the second time in franchise history the team has picked at No. 4 — they selected pitcher Riley Pint in 2016.

Here’s a look at why draftniks are saying Holliday will land with Colorado.

“Rumor is the Rockies would go over slot to get Holliday here. If he’s gone, I think they’d take one of the college pitchers.” See the full mock draft.

“The buzz for months now has been that Holliday won’t get past the Rockies if he’s on the board. That makes him the easy pick in this iteration. If Holliday is off the board, Arquette could be the top option. I’ve also heard the Rockies are linked to all three of the top college lefties in the class, though I might lean towards Doyle more than Arnold, and I’m not expecting them to have a chance at Anderson.” See the full mock draft.

“A massive, power-hitting athlete named Holliday in a Rockies uniform is just right. And this isn’t just for the cute story of Ethan Holliday following in the footsteps of his father, Matt, who spent his first six seasons with the Rockies. Holliday is atop the draft board of a number of teams. He’s different from his older brother (and 2022 No. 1 pick), Jackson. Ethan is bigger (6-foot-4), heartier (210 pounds) and likelier to stay on the left side of the infield. Power is his carrying tool, and with the Rockies years away from contention, they can target upside that might be a little slower developing than the college talent still on the board,” Jeff Passan writes. “The biggest lock in the Draft is that the Rockies will take Holliday if he gets to them, and he might get paid more here than at No. 1. (Kade) Anderson seems like the only pitcher they’d strongly consider, with (Aiva) Arquette and (Eli) Willits as other possibilities.” See the full mock draft.
