Tennessee baseball had 25 players who entered the transfer portal after the 2025 season.

Twenty of the players Vols and coach Tony Vitello lost were pitchers, most notably reliever Dylan Loy. Tennessee added five pitchers and a pair of two-way players in the portal, which closed July 1. The Vols can continue to add players who entered the portal.

Pitcher Dylan Loy is Tennessee baseball’s biggest loss to transfer portal

Loy entered the transfer portal after his sophomore season. He had 54 total appearances in his tenure, leading the SEC as a sophomore with 33.

The Pigeon Forge native committed to Georgia Tech on July 3. He was 6-0 with a 3.22 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 64â…“ innings during his two seasons with the Vols.

Loy pitched in two of the College World Series finals games against Texas A&M in 2024, helping Tennessee achieve its first national championship in program history. He also threw 4â…” scoreless innings and earned the win in the 2024 SEC Tournament championship game against LSU.

Which Tennessee pitchers entered the transfer portal, where they’ve landed

Tennessee lost 20 of the pitchers from the 2025 roster. Most of them had minor roles, if any. Only Michael Sharman and Austin Breedlove pitched more than 20 innings; eight did not pitch at all.

Sharman went 3-1 in the 22â…” innings pitched as a redshirt junior. He had a 3.18 ERA in 17 appearances. Sharman committed to Clemson on June 28.

Breedlove pitched in 25 games with a 3.42 ERA and striking out 31 in 23â…” innings.

Thomas Crabtree, Andrew Behnke and Ryan Combs had lesser roles. All had an ERA of 3.00 or above with the Vols, while not factoring into the SEC pitching mix. Crabtree committed to Southern Miss and Behnke to Georgia.

Bryson Thacker and Brayden Sharp departed after their redshirt freshman seasons. Thacker pitched in five games in 2025, while Sharp made 11 appearances in two seasons. Thacker committed to West Virginia on June 26 and Sharp committed to Rice on June 23.

Austin Hunley, Tanner Wiggins, Luke Payne and Brayden May all had fewer than 10 innings. They combined for 22 appearances, none in SEC play.

Dane Bjorn, Ryler Smart, Andrew DuMont, Beau Revord, Stratton Scott, Ben Martin, Tate Strickland and Aidan Hayse did not pitch for the Vols in 2025. Bjorn was at UT for two seasons. Smart committed to LSU and Scott will go to ETSU.

Five Tennessee position players entered the portal

Colby Backus spent three seasons with Tennessee as a backup outfielder after transferring from Walters State. He played 49 games from 2024-2025 and had a .319 batting average with five home runs and 13 RBIs in 47 at-bats.

Backus filled in for Hunter Ensley in the College World Series against North Carolina in 2024.

Infielders Jack Jones, Dane Morrow and Robinson Martin didn’t play as freshmen during the 2025 season. Martin committed to LSU Eunice on June 18.

Freshman catcher Brooks Wright also didn’t play in 2025. He played at Bearden in high school and was ranked No. 1 catcher in the 2024 recruiting lass in Tennessee by Perfect Game.
