The San Diego Padres opened their three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies with a 4-2 win at Petco Park, Friday. The result of the game was thanks in large part to the five All-Stars on the San Diego roster, who were responsible for game saving plays and run scoring hits.

Jason Adam found himself in a significant jam in the top of the eighth inning. Adam replaced, Adrian Morejon, the most recently named All-Star, after he completed the top of the seventh inning facing just three batters and recording two strikeouts.

Adam opened the inning by allowing a walk to Trea Turner and getting Kyle Schwarber to fly out. Bryce Harper singled to push Turner to second and Alec Bohm singled to load the bases with one out. Adam got Nick Castellanos to ground out back to him in front of the mound. Adam scooped the ball with his glove and flipped it to Elias Diaz to force out Turner and keep the Padres in front, 3-2.

Adam still had the bases loaded and had to get one more out to end the eighth inning. He did just that when he induced a pop out from Max Kepler to Jose Iglesias in shallow center field to escape the inning with the San Diego lead in tact.

Manny Machado gave the Padres some breathing room in the bottom of the eighth inning with a leadoff home run to right field. The solo shot was the 17th of the season for Machado and gave San Diego a 4-2 lead.

The Padres gave support to starter Ryan Bergert, who made his return from the IL, by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning to give San Diego a 3-1 lead.

Iglesias hit an RBI-double to score Xander Bogaerts to make the score, 1-1. Elias Diaz drove in Jackson Merrill for the second run for the Padres, to make the score, 2-1. Fernando Tatis Jr. capped the scoring in the inning with a line drive to center field, which scored Iglesias and put San Diego up, 3-1.

Philadelphia added a run in the top of the third inning on a Schwarber solo home run to make the score, 3-2. The Phillies had several chances to score later in the game, such as the eighth inning, but Bergert and the Padres bullpen did not allow a run after the third.

Robert Suarez added another save to his season total, giving him 28 on the year. He faced Realmuto, Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh and recorded three outs to seal the win for the Padres.

San Diego takes on Philadelphia, Saturday at 4:35 p.m.
