DONNELLSON — With the help of Jalyn Hawk, the Central Lee High School softball team made quick work of Monticello Thursday in just three innings of offense.

The Hawks soared to an 11-0 home win over Monticello in a Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinal.

Central Lee (22-8) advances to Saturday’s semifinal for a rematch at No. 10 Washington (27-9). Washington took a 22-0 win from Midland Thursday. Monticello ends the year with a record of 8-22.

The Hawks won a postseason game last year with a seventh-inning rally at Washington then lost to Davenport Assumption in the state qualifying game.

Hawk pitched the win and helped herself with all the run support she would need when she delivered a two-run home run in the first inning. She hit a two-out, two-run single in the second inning.

The Central Lee offense was efficient, the base running was aggressive and Hawk yielded a single hit from her four innings in the circle. She struck out three with no walks.

Anyone that knows about the Hawks knows about Kenna Sandoval, who leads the team in a number of hitting statistics including batting average (.483) and home runs (8).

She was the only Hawk without a hit Thursday night. She still scored twice.

Of the Hawks 11 hits, almost half (5) were extra-base knocks.

Olivia Day, Carlee Pezley, Jaliann Hawk and Elaina Barlow each hit a double.

Jaci Hawk was 2-for-3 at the top of the order and Pezley was 2-for-3 in the No. 2 spot.

Jalyn Hawk has a .388 batting average, a .440 on base percentage and a .622 slugging percentage to go with her 3.07 earned run average.

Hawk pitched into the fifth inning at Washington last season and Elaina Barlow threw the last two and two-thirds innings. The Hawks trailed 4-1 after six innings and scored a 5-4 win.

This season, the two teams played at the University of Iowa and the Demons won 5-3 with three runs in the seventh inning. Hayden Rule pitched six and a third innings for the Hawks and Barlow got the last two outs.

Saturday’s game time is 7 p.m. The winner will play Tuesday at the highest remaining ranked team’s home field.

The other side of the Region 5 bracket saw Mediapolis defeat West Burlington-Notre Dame 10-2 while Camanche trailed Davenport Assumption 4-0 at the end of the third inning. Mediapolis (15-8) plays the winner Saturday at Assumption.
