MARION, Va. (WCYB) — This May, a new era of baseball was born in Southwest Virginia – bringing baseball back to the city of Marion.

Enter the Hungry Mothers.

The Hungry Mothers are a collegiate summer baseball team in its inaugural season – making a pathway for ball players from all across the far Southwest Virginia region and beyond a home to play the game they love.

It’s a lot of fun. We all get to work together as a team, win baseball games, and have a lot of fun,” said Chilhowie native, Talan Poe. “Best part is getting to go out there on the mound and pitch at a place that I used to play at in high school.Seeing the community just falling behind you completely and making sure these guys are on the right path to their schools and helping them get better this summer is just a blessing,” said assistant coach and Bristol native, Mason Johns. “It’s great telling people I get to coach for the Hungry Mothers. It’s pretty cool.

And more importantly than just being in its inaugural season, this marks the grand return of a sport to a place that has been longing for baseball for quite some time – after laying down a history of roots on the diamond in the past.

I’m blessed. It’s awesome that we can come out here and do something that hasn’t been done for a really long time,” said Concord University player, JT Thompson. “We can be a part of something that’s a first time ever and we can do it with a lot of good guys. This community has really wanted something like this for years now and I think baseball is a perfect way to do it,” said Saltville native, Caleb Johnson. “With the history baseball has had in the county, it’s really cool.

Best of all, the Hungry Mothers name has a fun ring to it – and one the players and community are proud to be a part of. Now, it’s about creating an atmosphere that people will want to come back to for years to come.

It’s super exciting, especially just having baseball back in Marion,” said General Manager, Kelsey Marchant. “It’s gone well. We’ve had some good turnouts. We are just making sure that we create something where people have a good time and want to come back. So hopefully we can get even bigger next year.

The Hungry Mothers now look to finish the season out strong – getting six more home games in front of their crowd before the summer wraps up.
