CHICAGO — The Guardians may or may not contend for the postseason this year, but that doesn’t mean there will be bodies flying out of Progressive Field’s brand new locker room as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.
The Guardians, according to sources, have told teams that they are not going to trade their two top relievers — Emmanuel Clase and Cade Smith.
Contenders have been calling the Guardians since they dropped to 14 games behind the first-place Tigers in the AL Central and five games out of the last wild card spot.
They’re all looking for affordable big arms for the back end of their bullpen. Smith and Clase fit that description, but the Guardians have said no whenever their names have been mentioned.
Clase started slowly this year, but has still converted 20 of 24 save situations with a 3.05 ERA. He’s struck out 40, walked 10 and allowed 14 earned runs in 41 1/3 innings.
He hasn’t produced the numbers he did last year when he converted 47 saves in 50 chances and allowed five earned runs in 74 1/3 innings for a 0.61 ERA. But the 27-year-old right-hander has converted 16 of his last 18 saves.
Smith, the closer in waiting should someone convince the Guardians to deal Clase, is 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA. When Clase was being rested for a sore right shoulder, Smith converted three saves in four chances.
In 41 appearances, Smith has 59 strikeouts and 15 walks in 39 innings. The opposition is hitting .216 against him.
Clase is making $4.6 million this year. Next year, the final year of the guaranteed portion of his contract, he’ll make $6 million. The team holds options for 2027 and 2028 at $10 million each.
Smith is making $785,100, just above the major league minimum. This is Smith’s second season in the big leagues, which means he’s under team control for four more years.
Hunter Gaddis treated for sore right hand
Hunter Gaddis came down with cramping in his right hand while pitching in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader. He finished the eighth inning, but was having his hand and wrist evaluated on Saturday.
