CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox partnered up with a well-known community center on the city’s south side for more than just spring cleaning.
Some grabbed a paintbrush while others opted for a drill during a beautification event at Gary Comer Youth Center on Saturday.
Each year for the last 16 years, the White Sox Volunteer Corps have worked with City Year to participate in a day of impactful service.
“Every year we come out to a new organization. It’s our first year working with Gary Comer and we hope to continue to work together,” Sandra Avila, the Senior Coordinator of Community Relations for the White Sox, said.
From garden beds and bench building to bottling honey and painting a mural, 100 volunteers came ready to help.
“Today is going to help the community and youth at large in ways the center is helping the community at large every day,” Remington Price, the Executive Director of Gary Comer Youth Center, said.
Price says the center has a big focus on food access with its culinary arts and urban agriculture programs.
The agriculture program had nearly 200 young people in 2024. Overall, the youth center serves about 3,500 families and community members each year.
“All of our returning and all of our new volunteers, we couldn’t do this work without them. They show up, they deliver. We’re truly grateful for them,” Avila said.
