With the 38th selection in the 2025 draft, the Mets have selected Mitch Voit, an infielder from Michigan. Voit was a two-way player at Michigan for his first two seasons in college and was announced as such at the draft, but focused solely on hitting in his draft year and will almost certainly continue to do so as a pro.
As a Junior at Michigan this season, he batted .346/.471/.668 with more walks (40) than strikeouts (34) and 14 HR in 261 PA. Those are excellent stats to be sure, but not quite world-beating in a non-SEC conference (Big Ten). However, there’s a lot more when you dig under the surface. The approach data, simply put, is sparkling; Voit rarely chases, is aggressive in the zone, makes contact at a high rate, and distributes his well hit balls at optimal spray angles. He also showed out at the draft combine, demonstrating the best body-mass-relative force output of any player who participated. There’s work to be done here, likely needing a swing change, but this is a profile that smart, analytically inclined teams liked.
Voit will appear to be something of a reach relative to public boards; Baseball America ranked him 149th, MLB had him at 63, and Baseball Prospectus wrote him as a name of interest rather than as part of their top-50. That’s an indication that Voit will be an underslot pick (more on those mechanics here), which will likely allow the Mets to draft a more interesting prep pick at some point. Keep an eye on that with their next pick – pick 108 in the third round – coming up later tonight.
