LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – University of Louisville pitcher Patrick Forbes was taken in the first round, 29th overall, by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft Sunday.
He becomes the 10th UofL baseball player to be picked in the first round. The last time a Cardinal heard his name called in the opening round was Henry Davis going first overall to the Pirates in 2021. He’s also the 106th player taken in the draft in Dan McDonnell’s tenure.
Forbes spent three years at UofL, starting as a two-way player and he actually was in the batter’s box more than on the mound during his freshman year, hitting .258 with three doubles and three home runs.
When he transitioned to full-time pitcher as a sophomore, he struck out 32 and posted a 3.72 ERA in his 12 appearances, earning him a spot on the USA Collegiate National Team in the summer.
As a junior, Forbes became the Cards’ ace, getting the ball as the Friday night starter. On opening day, he struck out 11 against No. 7 Texas. He struck out at least nine in eight of his starts that year, including two games with 13 Ks – the first against Cal in March and the second against East Tennessee State in the opening round of the NCAA Nashville Regional.
He finished the 2025 season with 117 strikeouts, tied for the seventh-best season at UofL.
