One of the best collegiate pitchers this past season will soon be pitching for the Red Sox organization.

The Boston Red Sox drafted Witherspoon, the University of Oklahoma ace the past two seasons, with the 15th pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft Sunday. Witherspoon is the first Sooner drafted in the first round since the Chicago Cubs drafted Cade Horton in 2022, who is starting in the big leagues this season.

Witherspoon has been one of the best pitchers in the country the past two seasons. In his Oklahoma career, he went 18-7 with a 3.14 ERA in 175 innings pitched. He had 214 strikeouts to 63 walks in those two seasons as well.

This past season, he earned consensus All-American status and All-SEC first team.

Witherspoon came to OU from Northwest Florida State College before the 2024 season and originally came out of the bullpen for the Sooners, but quickly rose to OU’s ace on the mound.
