In one of the most exciting parts of All-Star Week, the 39th annual All-Star Derby will take place tonight at Truist Park in Atlanta.

The field is loaded with eight talented sluggers who are all participating in their first Derby, meaning a new home run king will be crowned. The event is missing famed HR hitters Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Kyle Schwarber or two-time Derby champ Pete Alonso, but does have MLB-leading HR slugger Cal Raleigh. Raleigh, a switch hitter who has 38 bombs on the season, will look to be the first catcher to ever win the Derby and, to add extra excitement, said he will hit from both sides of the plate in the contest. He could also be the first Mariner since Ken Griffey Jr. to win the Derby, which Griffey did three times, including in 1998 in Coors Field.

Here’s a look at the eight who will participate in the Derby tonight:

Ronald Acuña Jr. was originally slated to be Atlanta’s representative at Truist Park, but he was removed from the Derby on Friday. Fellow Brave Matt Olson took his place and will have the advantage of playing in front of his home. Sammy Sosa won the last Derby in Atlanta, which took place in 2000 at Turner Field.

Here’s a look at the last 10 years of Derby winners:

2024: Teoscar Hernández, Dodgers, Globe Life Field
2023: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Blue Jays, T-Mobile Park
2022: Juan Soto, Nationals, Dodger Stadium
2021: Pete Alonso, Mets, Coors Field
2019: Pete Alonso, Mets, Progressive Field
2018: Bryce Harper, Nationals, Nationals Park
2017: Aaron Judge, Marlins Park
2016: Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins, Petco Park
2015: Todd Frazier, Reds, Great American Ball Park

For the fourth consecutive season, the Rockies don’t have anyone in the HR Derby. Trevor Story was the last player in purple in the Derby, and he hit 20 in front of his home crowd at Coors Field in 2021.

The winner will not only take home $1 million of the $2.5 million prize pool. They will also be awarded with a custom chain:

Staying with changes made last season, the Derby no longer has a head-to-head first round. This year’s contest will have a first round, a semifinal and a final. In the first round, players have three minutes or 40 minutes with a bonus round to hit more before they commit three outs. Homers of 425 feet or more net more bonus time.

The top four will advance to the semis, where players will have two minutes or 27 pitches in (same in the finals), and home run totals from the first round don’t carry over.
