WVU Baseball redshirt senior left-handed pitcher Griffin Kirn was selected by the Athletics with the 411th pick in the 14th round of the MLB Draft Monday.
Kirn was superb in his singular season at WVU. He earned First Team All-Big 12 and was named Third-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
He was fourth in the Big 12 with 103 strikeouts and a 3.36 ERA. Starting in all Friday games, he tossed 99 innings, allowing only a .233 opponent batting average.
In the Clemson Regional, Kirn ignited the pitching staff to a Regional title. In game one against the University of Kentucky, he threw 7.1 innings, punching out seven and allowing one earned run.
After exhausting 118 pitches against Kentucky, Kirn returned on one day’s rest, earning the save in the title-clinching game.
Kirn is the second consecutive WVU pitcher to convert from Division II to become drafted, following David Clark, who was selected in the ninth round by the Los Angeles Angels.
