After taking four players during Day 1 of the 2025 MLB draft on Sunday, including fifth overall pick Liam Doyle, the Cardinals continue the draft Monday with 17 picks on Day 2.
This year’s MLB draft has been shortened in days and will include rounds 4-20. In recent years, rounds 4-20 have netted the Cardinals players who have contributed at the big-league level. Their 2018 draft class included seventh-round pick Brendan Donovan, who has won a Rawlings Gold Glove as a rookie in 2022 and was named an All-Star to this year’s Midsummer Classic.
Other mid-to-late round picks in recent years include outfielder Lars Nootbaar (eighth round, 2018), catcher Pedro Pages (sixth round, 2019), reliever Gordon Graceffo (fifth round, 2021), reliever Andre Granillo (14th round, 2021), and center fielder Victor Scott II (fifth round, 2022).

Round 4, 120th overall
Cade Crossland of the University of Oklahoma

School: University of Oklahoma
Background: In his lone season at the University of Oklahoma, Crossland went 5-5 with a 6.32 ERA and struck out 84 batters in 68 1/3 innings in the SEC. Crossland strained a back muscle during a fall practice that hampered him during the spring season. Crossland’s season-high seven innings and nine strikeouts against Nebraska in the NCAA regionals showed some of the potential the lefty has. The 21-year-old throws a fastball that can reach 98 mph but typically hovers around the low 90s mph, per Baseball America. His changeup is seen as above-average and ranges in the mid-80s mph. The two pitcher go with a slider and curveball that Baseball America has as 45s on their scale of 80. Before getting to Oklahoma, Crossland struggled in Division II baseball while at Ouachita Baptist (Oklahoma) in 2023 before impressing as a top junior college prospect while with the Weatherford (Texas) JC during the 2024 season.

Background: A third baseman in high school, Young spent two seasons in junior college before going 5-0 with a 3.84 ERA in 23 games (one start) this past season for East Carolina University. The righty struck out 92 batters in 70 1/3 innings and notched three saves for the Pirates. Young’s fastball averages 95 mph and reaches 99 mph, per Baseball America. He had most of his swing-and-miss success with his secondary pitches. Young’s mid-80s mph slider is a potential above-average pitch, per his scouting report. His curveball sits in the upper 70s mph, and his “fringy” changeup ranges in the mid-80s mph. The 21-year-old righty’s repertoire offers some intrigue about what he could do in a starting role if given the chance.
Round 6, 180th overall

School: University of Hawaii
Background: Miura led Hawaii in batting average (.338), runs scored (53), hits (72), stolen bases (18), and walks (46). His 46 walks also led the Big West and were seven more than the next-best player. He started in center field in 54 of the 55 games he appeared in for the Rainbow Warriors. Miura’s .914 OPS this past spring was his career-best in three seasons at Hawaii. He followed up the strong season with an encore performance in one of collegiate baseball’s top summer leagues. Across 16 games in the Cape Cod League, the 21-year-old native of Honolulu, Hawaii, had a .309 batting average, a .390 on-base percentage, and a .412 slugging percentage. Miura’s bat-to-ball skills have kept him to a 10.9% strikeout rate over three seasons in the Big West.

Background: Graham made just one start this past season before he experienced right-arm soreness and required season-ending Tommy John surgery. Seen as a power arm with a high-effort delivery, Graham has been able to touch 98 mph with a fastball that typically sits in the mid-90s mph, per Baseball America’s scouting report of the righty. A low-80s mph slider and a sharp cutter that is around 90 mph highlight a secondary that also includes a curveball and a changeup. Scouts believe he could benefit from shortening his pitch mix as it could allow for more consistency for Graham, who has been a below-average strike-thrower, per Baseball America. Before his injury-shortened 2025 season, Graham held an 8.91 ERA in 33 1/3 innings and struck out 34 batters while walking 16 in a primary relief role for the Bulldogs in the 2024 season.

Background: A transfer this past season after spending two years at St. Joseph’s University, Weingartner batted .250, reached base at a .384 clip and slugged .469 in 56 games for the Nittany Lions. He hit 11 homers and went 30 for 33 on stolen base attempts. Weingartner, who turned 21 years old on July 5, was one of seven players across Division I baseball with 11 or more homers and 30 or more stolen bases this past spring. A first team all-Atlantic 10 honoree as a sophomore with St. Joseph’s in 2024, Weingartner posted a 1.006 OPS for the Hawks before producing an .853 OPS in his lone season playing in the Big 10. The 21-year-old is described as a patient hitter who won’t expand his strike zone too often. He increased his walk rate to 15.9% this past spring after holding a 12.4% walk rate in his final season in the Atlantic 10. Defensively, he can handle a premium position like shortstop, his scouting report says.
Round 9, 270th overall
Michael Dattalo

School: Dallas Baptist University
Background: In his second season for Dallas Baptist University, Dattalo appeared in 59 games and slashed .318/.433/.435 with 15 doubles and three homers. Dattalo drew more walks (41) than he struck out (32) while appearing at third base in 56 of his 59 games. The 21-year-old infielder produced a .345 batting average in three collegiate seasons that began with a freshman year at Northwestern State, where he batted .371 in 56 games. Despite posting an on-base percentage that was 38 points higher than it was in his sophomore season, Dattalo’s slugging percentage as a junior dropped from .517 to .435. First base could be an option for Dattalo if he can’t stick at third, which has been his primary position through three collegiate seasons.

Background: A primary reliever through his college career, Van Dyke posted a 1.52 ERA and struck out 71 batters while walking 16 in 47 1/3 innings over 27 outings for Stetson University this past season. He secured nine saves and went 7-0 in relief. The righty has a fastball that he can get up to 97 mph and a slider that sits in the lower 80s mph, per Baseball America. Both pitches have helped him strike out 31.3% over two seasons with Stetson. Van Dyke’s slider led to a 49% whiff rate. The righty also throws a curveball that is in the mid-70s mph and a changeup in the lower 80s mph. His resume and profile make him a “surefire” reliever following his college career, per his scouting report.

Background: A strong commit to the University of Texas coming out of high school in 2022, Flores slashed .270/.350/.528 across three seasons with the Longhorns. While there, Flores was coached by former All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who has been a part of Texas’s coaching staff for four of the previous five seasons. Seen as an aggressive hitter, Flores has produced top-end exit velocities that have reached 110 mph and has a pull-heavy approach, per Baseball America. Though, that has come with some inconsistencies with pitch recognition and some issues with chasing out of the strike zone. He is a below-average base runner and reliable defender with fluid actions, an advanced internal clock, and a plus arm. Despite his size, he’s shown he has not outgrown the shortstop position and could have a chance to stick there in the pros.

Background: Coming off a year lost to injury, Echeman posted a career-best 4.34 ERA in 56 innings in a role as a starter and reliever for the Norse. The strides were backed up by a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings as a starter this summer in the Cape Cod League. Echeman, who spent three seasons as Northern Kentucky, sported a 35.7% strikeout rate and a 9.4% walk rate this past spring. His strikeout rate ranked 10th in the nation among qualified pitchers, per Baseball America. His low-90s mph fastball gets up to 95 mph. His upper-80s mph cutter is seen as his most consistent secondary pitch and goes with a low 80s mph slider that averages nearly 18 inches of horizontal break, a curveball in the low 80s mph with “tons of depth” and a mid-80s mph changeup that is known to “tumble and fade,” per Baseball America. The command on his secondary still remains an area of improvement. He could transfer to the University of Kentucky if he does not sign.
Round 13, 390th overall

Background: The right-hander out of the Division II Saginaw Valley State pitched exclusively out of relief in his previous two seasons. He was limited to 6 2/3 innings in 2024 but logged 33 1/3 innings across 19 relief appearances this past spring. He struck out 51 batters, walked 18, and held a 4.59 ERA. The 51 strikeouts gave Shelagowski a 33.6% strikeout rate. The 21-year-old Shelagowski logged 5 1/3 innings this summer in the Northwoods collegiate baseball summer league, where he struck out 10 of the 23 batters he faced.

Background: In his second season for Iowa after transferring from Creighton University after the 2023 season, Watts ended the 2025 season with a 4.73 ERA in 24 games as a reliever for the Hawkeyes. Watts recorded 45 strikeouts in 40 innings while collecting two saves and maintaining a 1.15 WHIP. The 21-year-old worked out of the bullpen in 42 of the 45 games he played in for Iowa. Although his ERA jumped from 3.18 in 2024 to above 4.70 this past season, Watts cut his walk rate from 16.4% to 11.2%.

Background: A college teammate of 2024 Cardinals minor league pitcher of the year Quinn Mathews, Haskins batted .326, slugged .575, and had a .945 OPS in his fourth season at Stanford. The 22-year-old infielder produced career highs in homers (14), RBIs (42), and OPS as he reached a career-high in plate appearances with 244. Haskins had not received more than 175 plate appearances in a season until he reached his junior year in 2024. Haskins slashed .278/.330/.459 in 54 games that season before producing career marks in batting average, on-base percentage (.370), and slugging percentage over 51 games this past season. He was named to the all-ACC third team in 2025.

Background: In his lone season at Kansas, Breckheimer maintained a 3.56 ERA and struck out 50 batters in 48 innings. Breckheimer worked exclusively from the bullpen as a Jayhawk. Seven of his 33 appearances ended in a successful save attempt. The 6-foot-5 righty attended Bryant & Stratton College-Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin before arriving on camps at Kansas.

Background: Nickens, who turned 22 on Friday, spent his fourth collegiate season at Austin Peay after playing for the University of Houston from 2022 to 2024. In his lone season for the Governors, Nickens hit .422 with a .520 on-base percentage and a .768 slugging percentage in 59 game. He posted a 1.288 OPS after a final down year at Houston where he had a .624 OPS in 37 games during the 2024 season. Nickens was named ASUN Player of the Year and was named a finalist for the Bobby Bragan National League Collegiate Slugger award. The other three finalists alongside Nickens includes Aiva Arquette, the seventh overall pick in this year’s draft by the Marlins, 31st overall pick Wehiwa Aloy, who was taken by the Orioles, and Nationals’ 15th round pick Jacob Walsh.

Background: A reliever in each of his first three season at South Dakota State University, Driessen held a career-best 4.37 ERA in 35 innings from the bullpen. Driessen has pitched exclusively since joining the Jackrabbits’ program. He’s logged 103 innings and struck out 28.4% of the batters he’s faced. His fastball ranged from 91 to 96 mph. He also throws a curveball that ranges around 80 mph. Finding improved command and control on his curveball could benefit the righty.
Round 19, 570th overall

Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 213 pounds
School: Appalachian State University
Background: Best went 2-5 with a 5.36 ERA in 22 games (seven starts) for Appalachian State University this past spring after the 21-year-old righty pitched for George Washington University the spring prior. The righty also spent time at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota in Bradenton, Florida. Although Best posted a 11.2 K/9, he had a 6.00 walked per nine innings and a 13.7% walk rate in 40 1/3 innings in his lone season at Appalachian State University.

Background: Heath, a native of O’Fallon, Missouri, had his name called as the Cardinals’ 20th round pick on his 22nd birthday. Heath, who attended Veritas Christian Academy, batted .349 and had a 1.050 OPS in four seasons at the University of Central Missouri. He followed a 54-game season in 2024 that included a 1.235 OP and 16 homers by hitting nine homers and posting a 1.088 OPS in 38 games. He’s primarily played catcher while college and in collegiate summer leagues, but does have some experience at first base.
