ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. will bat second and start in left field during Tuesday’s All-Star Game, National League manager Dave Roberts announced Monday.

Acuña was elected to the All-Star game via fan vote, leading all National League outfielders in total votes after just 36 games since returning from a torn left ACL injury.

Chris Sale and Matt Olson are also All-Stars representing Atlanta, though the former won’t participate due to a fractured rib injury.

But the latter actually filled in for Acuña in Monday’s Home Run Derby after he was dealing with a minor back injury. Olson, one of the most durable players in the league, participated once in the event before, hitting 23 home runs during the 2021 derby while a member of the Oakland Athletics.

A Lilburn native, Olson was just six years old when his family took him to Turner Field to watch Sammy Sosa power his way to a Home Run Derby win during the 2000 All-Star Game festivities. He hit 15 home runs and failed to make it out of the first round.

But that didn’t matter. He had the time of his life.

“The reaction of the intros and the support during the round was awesome,” Olson said. “Probably the loudest I’ve heard the place when I kinda got going in the second half.”

With 15 home runs, Olson finished in seventh place. The top four — Oneil Cruz (21), Junior Caminero (21), Byron Buxton (20) and Cal Raleigh (17) — advanced to the semifinals. Brent Rooker (17), James Wood (16), Olson and Jazz Chisholm Jr. (3) fell short.

Raleigh went on to win, slugging 18 home runs to beat Junior Caminero’s 15 in the final round to continue his record-breaking season. He leads the league with 38 home runs and is on pace for 65 home runs.

Freeman hitting 5th, Fried a reserve for AL All-Stars

Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman is hitting fifth and starting at first base for the National League All-Stars.

He was an All-Star five times with Atlanta and will play in his fourth with Los Angeles.

The 35-year-old had made many returns to Truist Park following his departure from Atlanta after the 2021 season, but this return has the potential to be extra special. After all, this is the place where Freeman spent the first 12 seasons of his Hall of Fame career.

His former teammate, Max Fried, is also back in Atlanta as an American League All-Star, representing the New York Yankees. Fried still has a house in Atlanta, the city where he pitched from 2017-2024.

“I was able to go home last night and a lot of memories flooded in,” Fried said. “It’s incredible… it’s amazing. I know it means a lot to the city and organization, especially after things fell through in 2021. For (Atlanta) to be the host and show off The Battery and Truist to all fans around baseball, it’s really cool.”

The All-Star Game will start at 8 p.m.
