Penn State baseball had a second player selected in Day 2 of the 2025 MLB Draft, as junior infielder Ryan Weingartner was selected with the No. 240 pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in the middle of the eighth round on Monday.
Outfielder Paxton Kling was previously selected a round earlier at No. 205 overall in the seventh round by the Texas Rangers.
Weingartner, who transferred to Penn State prior to the 2025 season from St. Joseph’s, had a standout year in Happy Valley, slashing .250/.384/.469 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI, and 26 extra base hits in 56 games. The junior also set a program record with 30 stolen bases in 33 attempts, breaking the previous record set by Michael Campo in 1999 and Kyle Hannon in 2023 at 27.
It’s the first time in program history that Penn State has had two players drafted in the first eight rounds of the MLB Draft since the current format of a unified June/July draft was established in 1987. Weingartner does not have to sign with the Cardinals and can return for his senior year at Penn State, but his decision is not due until August 1.
