The Iowa Cubs activated Frankie Scalzo Jr.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs cleaned up the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers), 7-6 in ten innings.

It was a bullpen game for the I-Cubs because the pitcher whose turn it was in the rotation was otherwise occupied. Frankie Scalzo Jr. pitched the first two innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Both of those two hits were solo home runs, one in each inning. Scalzo walked one and struck out one.

Luke Little threw two innings of relief. He allowed two baserunners—one on a hit batsman and one on an error. But he picked off the runner who reached on an error and the hit batsman amounted to nothing. Little struck out three.

Ethan Roberts pitched the bottom of the ninth and got the win. Roberts allowed no runs and no hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Phil Bickford got the save as he retired all three batters he faced in the tenth inning. He struck out two of them.

Third baseman Chase Strumpf hit two home runs today. The first was a three-run home run in the seventh inning and then he hit a game-tying solo home run in the top of the ninth. Strumpf was 2 for 4. He now has six home runs this season.

Right fielder Owen Caissie hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, also his sixth on the year. Caissie went 1 for 5.

First baseman Jonathon Long gave the Cubs the lead in the top of the tenth with an RBI single that scored automatic runner Ben Cowles. Long was 1 for 5.

Left fielder Kevin Alcántara went 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored one run.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs cracked the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 5-0.

Three South Bend pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout. Ryan Gallagher was brilliant, throwing six innings without allowing a hit. He walked just two and struck out eight.

Luis Rujano relieved Gallagher to start the seventh inning and the first batter he faced broke up the no-no. But Rujano pitched two scoreless innings and gave up two hits. He struck out three and did not walk anyone.

Sam Thoresen pitched the ninth and gave up a two-out single, but nothing else. Thoresen struck out one.

South Bend scored four runs in the first, one in the second and then the bats took the rest of the game off. Catcher Miguel Pabon had a two-run single in the first. He was 1 for 4. He then scored on a double by left fielder Reginald Preciado. Preciado went 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Center fielder Andy Garriola went 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. Garriola scored on Pabon’s single.

The Pelicans took the no-hitter until the first batter of the eighth inning. Matthew Peters gave up two runs and two hits in the eighth. He pitched 1.1 innings and walked two and struck out two.
