ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Two 2023 Rockford Rivets are making their way to the big leagues after being drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Ethan Storm, a Sycamore native, was selected by the Rays in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball Draft and the 387th overall pick.
Brendan Summerhill, a Chicago native and 2023 Rivets outfielder, was drafted by the Rays with the 42nd overall pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
Storm had an impressive career at Sycamore High School and carried that into pitching at Rock Valley College. He also pitched for the Rivets during the 2023 season.
In 2024, Storm committed to the University of Oklahoma to play at the D1 level. But, according to Shaw Media, he said in the 12th round he knew he was about to be selected by the Rays. He will now make his way to Tampa to sign the contract and await his assignment in the organization.
The Rockford Rivets say Summerhill was a fan favorite throughout his time in Rockford.
In 2022, Summerhill signed with the Arizona Wildcats as part of the 2022 recruiting class. He missed time this spring with minor injuries, but he managed 14 home runs in 124 career games at Arizona.
The pick was part of the Competitive Balance Round (CBA) A. CBA is a round that occurs after the first round and before the second round. This makes Summerhill the fourth Wildcat to go first round in the past six drafts.
