The Texas Rangers drafted a former Nebraska baseball pitcher, Mason McConaughey, with the 115th pick in the 2025 MLB draft on Monday. This was announced by the team.
McConaughey went 10-4 in two seasons with the Nebraska baseball program. He recorded 110 strikeouts and sported a 3.86 ERA during his time with the program. His best season with the program came in 2024, when he tallied a 9-3 record with a 3.45 ERA in 91 strikeouts over the course of 73 innings
Now, he will join a Texas Rangers pitching staff that is young and full of talent.
Although the news is good, this is certainly a blow for the program itself. McConaughey would have been heading into his senior season and been the ace of the pitching staff. The program will have to look for other arms to fill the void left by McConaughey’s absence. This is certainly an interesting development for a team looking to take the next step.
