Life can come at you pretty fast sometimes. Just ask the Humboldt Crabs’ Elijah McNeal, the 18 year old the San Francisco Giants selected in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball Draft this week. In the past calendar year, the 6-feet-3-inch, 180-pound infield prospect out of Dublin, California, has seen a lotta bit of everything. In February, he turned 18 and, in the months that followed, he committed to take his talents to the University of California at Davis. In May, he graduated high school and within the month joined the Humboldt Crabs for the summer.

“I don’t think in all the time I’ve been here we have ever taken a high school kid,” said head coach Robin Guiver back in the first week of the summer. “Especially a position player — maybe one pitcher but never a position player. But we like Elijah, we like his build, he’s athletic and he’s definitely a draft prospect.”
McNeal’s numbers in high school don’t jump off page, but seeing McNeal in person makes you understand what scouts see. His summer has been solid. In his 15 games, the youngster has driven in nine runs and held his own while standing out athletically in what have proven to be a very high-level, competitive league. He has played solid defense at shortstop, only committing two errors.
The momentum of the past few months continued for McNeal this week. After a long trip to Medford and returning home to a busy weekend of four games in three days, life got even crazier on Tuesday. The San Francisco Giants selected him on the second day of the MLB Draft. A draft prospect indeed — coach Guiver’s prediction has come to fruition. Whether he’ll sign on or go to UC Davis has yet to be announced. Check back for updates and Humboldt Crabs baseball coverage this week.
