EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Two baseball pitchers with ties to the Borderland got the attention of the Baltimore Orioles.

According to El Paso Matters, Daniel Lopez, who graduated from Socorro High School in 2024, was picked in the 12th round of the Major League Draft by the Orioles,

El Paso Matters said that after graduating from high school, the Socorro alum was named to the Texas High School Coaches association Super Elite Team, before playing this last season for Odessa College.

I was actually at the gym. I Just getting random text and then my advisor finally called me and… told me that I was drafted,” said Lopez, in an interview with KFOX14/CBS4 Wednesday.

Lopez wants to thank Coach Ortega of Socorro High School and Coach Hellstrom of Odessa College for helping him get to this moment, as well as his family and supporters.

I just want to thank my family and everybody that’s my support system. I mean I wouldn’t be here without them,” Lopez said.

The right-handed hurler posted a 4.89 ERA with Odessa this past season, racking up 81 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched.

He has not yet signed an official contract with the Orioles organization.

Meanwhile, the Burlington Sock Puppets, a summer collegiate baseball team of the Appalachian League, took to social media to announce that Isaac Silva was signed with the Orioles.

Silva is from Las Cruces and graduated from Organ Mountain High School, before joining the Troy University in Alabama’s baseball team and then transferring to Murray State’s in Kentucky, according to Murray State’s website.

I don’t think it’s hit me yet, like it’s great to hear the call, I feel like it will hit me when I get to the spring training facilities. That’s what’s next for me, heading up to Florida. Going to the spring training facilities there,” Silva said in an interview with KFOX14/CBS4 Wednesday.

Silva wanted to shout out Coaches Skirka and Adkins from Murray state, and high school Coaches Tracy and Slada.

The right-hander posted a 4.84 ERA with the Racers this past season, totaling 81 strikeouts as well.
