Gaston Christian baseball product Meridian Leffew has one more important decision to make.

The local standout was selected Monday by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round with pick No. 579 of the 2025 MLB Draft.

For his career, Leffew hit .406 with 13 home runs and 74 RBIs. He also had 106 career hits, including 15 doubles, and scored 101 runs. This past spring, he hit .403 with three home runs and 18 RBIs, helping the Eagles to a berth in the NCISAA 3A championship series.

A University of Central Florida (UCF) baseball signee, Leffew graduated a year early anticipating the potential of getting a headstart on his college or professional career.

“It was a big decision,” Leffew said in May following a Gaston Christian playoff win. “It really came down to (whether) it was worth it (because of) my age in the draft and if I was ready for college ball. Ultimately we decided I was ready for college ball, and it was our decision to class up.”

Leffew is part of select company, one of almost 30 players from North Carolina selected in this year’s MLB Draft.
