ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – If the Atlanta Braves didn’t already have enough injuries under their belt this season, Austin Riley’s strained abdomen was certainly the cherry on top.

He suffered the injury three days before the All-Star break, feeling discomfort during a couple of defensive plays against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The team will be without Riley while they kick off the second half of the season on Friday with a three-game series against the New York Yankees at Truist Park. The first two games of the series will be broadcast live on Gray Media.

The Braves recalled Nacho Alvarez Jr. to take Riley’s spot. Alvarez was hitting .361 in 11 games with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Atlanta (42-53) is 12.5 games back in the NL East race, and is without starters Chris Sale, Spencer Schwellenbach, AJ Smith-Shawver and Reynaldo Lopez due to injury. That leaves Spencer Strider, Grant Holmes and Bryce Elder. Right-hander Davis Daniel started Sunday and remains and option for the rotation, but things are bleak in the starting rotation right now for Atlanta.

The Yankees (53-43) come into town two games back in the AL East race.
