An era is ending at Methodist.
Tom Austin, one of NCAA Division III baseball’s winningest coaches, is calling it a career after 46 seasons in Fayetteville. He retires with a record of 1,318-632-10 (67.4%) and six College World Series appearances with the Monarchs, going as far as runner-up in 1995.
“Coaching baseball at Methodist University has never been work… it was a pleasure!” Austin said in a school statement issued Wednesday, July 16, announcing his retirement.
Austin’s former player and assistant coach Spencer Martin has been named interim head coach.
He’ll look to build on a legacy that includes 23 conference championships (including this year’s USA South sweep), six NCAA Division III South Regional titles and 23 NCAA Division III National Tournament berths for the Monarchs under Austin.
“One word comes to my mind when I think about summarizing Coach Tom Austin’s career at Methodist University as our head baseball coach: Legendary,” Methodist Vice President and Director of Athletics Dave Eavenson saod in a school press release. “Tom’s tenure at Methodist has been filled with numerous championships, milestone wins, team and individual academic achievements, and most importantly, the tremendous positive impact he has had on the lives of thousands of baseball players.”
Austin currently ranks fourth on the NCAA Division III all-time coaching wins list and has been enshrined in the American Baseball Coaches Association and USA South Athletic Conference halls of fame.
