The Los Angeles Angels selected Bay City native Luke Lacourse in the sixth round at No. 169 overall in the 2025 MLB Draft on Monday, July 14. Lacourse just graduated from Bay City Western High School and is a Michigan State baseball commit.
Known as the “spin rate monster” according to MLB draft analyst Melanie Newman on Monday, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Lacourse throws some of the most difficult pitches of any pitcher in the country. Lacourse can throw a slider at 3516 RPM, averaging around 3452 RPM according to Prep Baseball Report, an extremely high revolutionary rate for an 18-year-old. His fastball also has more than enough spin on it; even at 93 mph, he averaged 2569 RPM at the Prep Baseball Super 60 event in February.
Lacourse was named Mr. Baseball by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association as the top senior player in the state. He was ranked the No. 8 best player in Michigan and the fourth-best right-hander in the state by Perfect Game. Lacourse also played basketball at Bay City.
