BANGOR, Maine — For the second day in a row in Maine, the DuBois Senior League All-Star baseball team broke out the bats while also getting lights out pitching in a 13-1, 5-inning rout of Maryland that landed the squad in today’s winner’s bracket final at the East Region Tournament.
DuBois churned out 16 hits in five innings, including seven in a seven-run outburst in the fourth that broke the game wide open and put the Pennsylvania state champs up 13-0. DuBois finished off the game early from there via the 10-run mercy-rule in five innings.
Eight of DuBois’ nine starters had at least one hit, led by Evan Burton who was 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Jack Statler and Bryson Kail also played starring roles in the offensive barrage that saw DuBois conjure up a ton of two-out magic. The PA state champs wound up scoring 12 of their 13 runs with two away.
Statler finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Kail was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
All that offense was more than enough for a trio of pitchers, led by Brody Knouse, who tossed 3 2/3 perfect innings before being lifted in the bottom of the fourth to keep him eligible to throw Sunday if need be. Knouse struck out seven of the 11 batters he faced, with no Chesapeake City, Md., player hitting a ball out of the infield against the righty.
Seth Wilmoth relieved Knouse in the fourth and got a fly out to end the inning before Maryland broke up the perfect game and shutout bid in the fifth by scoring a run on two hits against the righty.
Wilmoth was pulled at 19 pitches to save him for today, if needed, as DuBois turned to Carter Genevro with two on and one out. He promptly retired back-to-back hitters to finish off the game.
DuBois now finds itself as one of two undefeated teams in Bangor and battles Massachusetts today at 5 p.m. for a spot in Monday’s east Region championship game. Massachusetts beat knocked off Maine, by the same 13-1 score Friday in a game that went the full seven innings.
DuBois is currently 3-0 in the region tournament, while Maine is 2-0.
“This was another great team win,” said DuBois manager Tim Kail. “Brody (Knouse) came out and pitched a phenomenal game for us before we decided to pull him having the big lead. Then Seth (Wilmoth) and Carter (Genevro) came on and did what they needed to do for us to end the game there in the fifth.
“Offensively, the bats continued to roll, and once it was everybody, which is great to see. Evan (Burton), Bryson (Kail) and Jack (Statler) all had huge games for us today, but we’re getting production from everyone in the lineup, which has been a key to our success so far.
“We’re continuing to take it one game at a time, but we have put ourselves in a very good spot with how we’ve played. We’ll see how things go (today) against Massachusetts.”
DuBois was the visiting team for the third game in a row in Maine, and for the third time scored the first run.
Friday that run came in the top of the first when Wes Clyde ripped a leadoff triple and promptly scored on a Statler sac fly to right.
DuBois proceeded to load the bases with one out on singles by Kail and Burton before Knouse was hit by a pitch. Maryland starter Evan Tuohey halted the rally there, recording back-to-back outs to leave the bases full.
Knouse then took the mound in the bottom of the first and had his “A” stuff from the get-go as the righty retired 11 straight hitters to start the game before being pulled with two outs in the fourth.
With Knouse silencing the Maryland bats, DuBois’ offense went to work building that commanding 13-0 lead — scoring three runs in the second and two in the third before breaking the game wide open with the huge seven-run fourth.
Easton Harris led off the second with a single but was quickly erased when London Duncan hit into a fielder’s choice. Tuohey then got Clyde to fly out as it looked like it might be a fast inning for the Maryland pitcher.
However, Statler ripped a two-out single to left score Duncan before racing around to third on a Kail double. Burton then smacked a single of his own to left to plate both runners for a 4-0 lead.
Statler did more damage in the third when he had another two-out hit — this one a single up the middle that might have deflected off the second base bag. Harris and Duncan, who reached on a fielder’s choice and hit by pitch, scored on the single to make it 6-0.
Maryland pulled Tuohey after three innings, and DuBois really got to reliever Bryce Buckington — scoring seven runs on seven hits and a pair of errors in the top of the fourth.
The inning started innocently enough, as Burton hit a leadoff single but was erased on a fielder’s choice. Knouse then hit into another fielder’s choice that resulted in the second out. An errant throw to first on a double play try allowed Knouse to take second.
The flood gates opened from there with two away.
Three straight RBI doubles by Nate Witherite, Harris and Duncan promptly pushed the lead to 9-0. Harris was 2-for-4 in the win.
Wes Clyde then reached on an error that allowed Duncan to come home. Statler followed with his third single of the game before he and Clyde both came home on a Kail double. Burton punctuated the big inning with a triple to right that plated kKail with DuBois’ 13th and final run.
Maryland avoided the shutout in the fifth when back-to-back doubles by Braden Brown and Buckington off Wilmoth produced the team’s lone run.
Wilmoth then hit Nick Galasso before Genevro came on to finsihish off the game with two quick outs.
