The Detroit Tigers entered the 2025 season with either baseball’s top farm system, or something pretty close to it, depending on the evaluator.
And, like the 29 other MLB teams, the Tigers only bolstered their talent pool in last week’s draft. The Tigers had 21 selections, led by top pick Jordan Yost, a prep shortstop from Florida, at No. 24 overall.
Baseball America on Monday released how it sees those picks stacking up in the system, updating its top 30 prospects for every team.
For the Tigers, the combination of having a talent-rich system and a later first-round pick — they selected prep shortstop Bryce Rainer at No. 11 overall last year — likely is the reason why their top prospects were unaltered by the influx of draft talent, with Double-A Erie teammates Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark leading the list at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, followed by Rainer.
Just four draft picks cracked Baseball America’s top 30 for the Tigers, though two made the top 10, with outfielder Nick Dumesnil checking in at No. 9, followed by Yost.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Dumesnil was selected in the eighth round (No. 249 overall) out of California Baptist University.
“Dumesnil’s past hitting success gives the Tigers hope he can be a well-rounded outfielder able to play center and left field,” Baseball America writes.
Baseball America says of Yost: “Yost has a strong understanding of the zone and makes enough contact to develop above-average or plus pure hitting ability, though he needs to add a significant amount of strength. … Yost does have the sort of frame that suggests more strength is coming, though he might always profile as a hit-over-power bat who will get his slugging more from doubles than homers. Yost is a plus runner who has the tools to stick at a number of up-the-middle defensive positions.”
Other draft picks making the Tigers’ top 30 list from Baseball America:
▶ 17. Malachi Witherspoon, pitcher, Oklahoma (second round, No. 62 overall)
▶ 22. Michael Oliveto, catcher, Hauppauge (New York) High School (CB-A, No. 34)
