— Adolis Garcia’s place in Rangers lore is secure, but, when he’s gone, you won’t miss moments like a couple from Sunday. A hopeless throw home, allowing a baserunner to take second, and failing to score from second on a soft single to center in a close game.
— ESPN comments on the cool confines of the Globe compared to what it was like across the street calls for an update. Anybody still mad the Rangers moved indoors?
— Now that training camp is here, we’ll see what Jerry Jones does to steer the conversation away from the Rangers. Chris Young should make it hard to change the subject.
Rangers
— Joe Martin, honorable executive director of the Texas High School Coaches Association, tells our Greg Riddle that some agents are gouging kids 30% to 40% on NIL deals. The maximum NFL agents are allowed is 3%. Coaches are pushing for federal regulations, which suddenly aren’t such a bad thing.
— Paige Bueckers’ 4-point shot was pretty much the highlight of her WNBA All-Star experience, but she’s just getting started. Question is, what will the Wings surround her with as she grows?
— Chris Paul is going back to the Clippers and his home on the West Coast, but Nico Harrison could have taken a step on his rebuild with Mavs fans if he’d talked Paul into staying in Texas. Nothing against D’Angelo Russell, but, c’mon, it’s Chris Paul
— Story time: Evans Caglage, a sweetheart of a man gone too soon at 69, shot everything from fashion to Cowboys in a rich 35-year career with The Dallas Morning News, but his best work, in my opinion, was from our wedding in 1987. The photos look less like your standard bride-and-groom fare than newspaper fodder, which was as we wished. Personal favorite: The loving gaze of the bride and groom seemingly separated by the back of the preacher’s bald head. A marriage between SportsDay’s back-up Rangers writer and its gorgeous office manager was big enough news that a quarter of the staff drove all the way to Russellville, Ark., just to see if she’d go through with it. A sportswriter from Houston who camped out at a local park — a story in its own, but never mind – was asked what he was in town for. Told it was the Ford-Sherrington wedding, the local said, “You know she’s marrying someone from out of state.” The locals received the interlopers without incident, though Highway 7’s twists and turns did a number on several misguided travelers. Otherwise, the back-yard ceremony went off without a hitch; my brand new mother-in-law survived the shingles she’d incurred at the prospects; and the cops only came out twice. The images decorate several rooms of our humble home, reminders of what I looked like with hair, not to mention the best day of my life. Thanks for the memories, Evans.
