{KXLG -Watertown, SD} The Watertown Wildfire dominated the South Dakota Girls Fastpitch East Rec Division state tournament, culminating in an 11-1 victory over the Redfield Knockouts in the championship game held Sunday afternoon at Sherman Park.
The Wildfire’s path to the title included a strong showing in earlier rounds. On Saturday, the Wildfire faced the Freeman Force, securing a commanding 12-2 mercy-rule win. Their offense ignited early with a five-run surge in the first inning, setting a decisive tone for the game.
The Redfield Knockouts also demonstrated their resilience throughout the tournament. In a back-and-forth contest on Saturday, they earned a 15-11 victory over the McCook Daredevils. Redfield rallied for a five-run comeback, propelled by a crucial three-run home run from Ella Rude-Peterson, to advance to the winners’ bracket.
In the championship showdown, Watertown’s offense continued its powerful performance. The Wildfire broke open the scoring with a decisive six-run surge in the second inning. They added another run in the third and sealed their victory with four more runs in the fourth.
The Watertown Wildfire’s overall performance throughout the tournament was exceptional, as they outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 48-7 across their four games, showcasing their dominance while claiming the recreational softball state title.
