Arlington, TX – The Texas Rangers opened up a 3 game set against the Athletics on Monday night. Jack Leiter took the hill for the Texas team while the Athletics started Jacob Lopez.
The Rangers are coming off series wins against the Astros and Tigers, and have put themselves at the .500 mark for the first time in a while.
The Rangers started the scoring in the 3rd inning with a lead off homer from Josh Jung in his first at-bat back at the major league level. The Athletics responded in the top of the 4th when Tyler Soderstrom drove in Nick Kurtz and the game was tied 1-1.
“[Josh Jung] just great at bats. He got some good swings off, his confidence and everything.” Bruce Bochy told us after the game. “It’s good to have him back, his Prescence means a lot to this club, and for him to hit the home-run his first time up, he had to feel good about that.”
The tie was broken by Cody Freeman, who got an RBI double for his first major league hit. One pitch later, MIchael Helman hit his first major league home-run, a 3-run shot to put the Rangers up 5-1 after 5 innings.
“The kids that came up too, Helman has a big game, Cody gets his first hit, those guys won that game for us.” Bochy said.
He later joked that it was Round Rock day at the Ballpark with all of the contributors that were called up today.
Nick Kurtz lead off the top of the 6th with a lead off homer off Leiter to make it 5-2.
Jack Leiter got into some trouble in the top of the seventh, but Hobie Milner came in and ended the threat leaving the game 5-2.
The Rangers tacked on two more runs in the 8th inning off a Helman fielders choice and a Corey Seager hit. Seager extended his on base streak to 22 games with that hit tonight.
Cole Winn came in a secured the victory and the Rangers are once again 1 game over .500 at 51-50.
Tomorrow night they will send Jacob deGrom to the mound to face off against the Athletics lineup.
