Yankees JC Escarra takes grounders at third base

With DJ LeMahieu’s release, the Yankees might require some additional infield versatility, so catcher-first baseman JC Escarra is taking grounders at third base, alongside Jorbit Vivas, who was just recalled from Triple-A. Escarra saw limited time at third base in the minors.

It’s time for the Yankees (55-45, second in AL East) versus Blue Jays (59-41, first in AL East) series finale from the Rogers Centre on Prime Video tonight.

The Yankees have yet to solve the Blue Jays this season, as they’ve lost five straight meetings against their AL East counterparts and started this matchup with a 4-1 loss in the series opener.

Over the course of the last two months, the Yankees have seen their seven-game lead in the division evaporate, with the Blue Jays now owning a four-game advantage in the AL East with a little over two months left in the regular season.

The Yankees will have one more chance to right the ship against Toronto, when they welcome in the Blue Jays to the Bronx from Sept. 5-7 at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees vs Blue Jays pitching probables

Yankees fans can breathe a sigh of relief with ace Max Fried back on the mound Wednesday night. The 31-year-old southpaw left his final start prior to All-Star weekend, as he pitched only three innings versus the Cubs on July 12 before exiting with a blister on his left index finger. While he unfortunately wasn’t able to pitch in his return to Atlanta during the All-Star Game, the extra days of rest was able to ensure that Fried would be available for the series finale on Wednesday.

In two starts against Toronto this year, Fried is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings pitched.

Opposite of Fried will be Chris Bassitt. The 36-year-old right-hander has been exceptional in July, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.89 ERA in four starts this month, which includes the first one only July 3 versus the Yankees where he struck out nine hitters in 5 2/3 innings for his eighth win of the year in the Blue Jays 8-5 victory.
