Through their first 37 games, the Toronto Blue Jays hold a losing record and sit in third place in the AL East.

While there’s still ample time to shift momentum, the team may be frustrated with the sluggish start, especially after a busy offseason that saw the additions of Anthony Santander, Max Scherzer, and Jeff Hoffman, along with a $500 million extension for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Peter Chawaga from The Sporting News writes that if the Blue Jays don’t show significant improvement, major changes could be on the horizon. Manager John Schneider may find himself under pressure if the team fails to make a deep playoff run, and Bo Bichette appears increasingly likely to depart, either in free agency after the season or possibly even via trade beforehand.

In an article for The Athletic, Mitch Bannon highlighted Bo Bichette’s emphasis on sharpening his defense this season, suggesting that his progress in that area could be a key factor in shaping his upcoming free agency.

«If the Blue Jays fail to extend Bichette, he’ll enter the market as a 27-year-old free agent with All-Star upside and three years with MVP votes. But what is his defensive future? Bichette is likely to move off shortstop eventually, wherever he ends up this offseason. That move could come in three years or, for some teams, as soon as next season. It could come sooner if he’s traded.» -Bannon

Mitch Bannon identified the Milwaukee Brewers and Atlanta Braves, along with the Blue Jays, as potential suitors for Bichette at shortstop. However, he also pointed out that Bichette’s value could increase even further if he’s open to transitioning to second base with a new team.

Bichette acknowledged that moving to second base might open doors with more teams, but emphasized that his primary focus remains on contributing to his current club.

«I know there are teams that have shortstops that wouldn’t move.” -Bichette

While awareness of other long-term shortstops isn’t a major headline, Bannon’s article suggests that Bichette may be willing to make the shift to second base if he moves to a new team later this season or next.
