Professional wrestling legend Randy Savage once played in the minor leagues for the Cincinnati Reds. Now the “Macho Man” will be featured in the team’s gear as part of the “Big Rubber Guys” line by collectmajor.com.
“Yes, we are putting out MLB figures but why not mix it up a little bit with wrestling? We bring you the best of both worlds! Macho Man in Cincinnati Red themed attire!” the company posted on its X account.
The announcement came during the company’s Summer Convention Reveals on YouTube. In addition to Savage, figures of Mr. Met and the Phillie Phanatic will be released in its new baseball line. No date was announced for when the figures will be available.
SEPTEMBER 21, 1989: Macho Man WWF wrestler Randy Savage, known as the Macho Man, enters the press room at the Reds game for a special interview with Reds game announcer, Marty Brennaman.
Savage, who died in 2011, played in the Reds’ farm system under his real name, Randy Poffo, appearing in 131 games for Tampa in 1974.
Savage also made a famous, controversial appearance in the Reds’ radio booth on Sept. 21, 1989. Appearing on the air with Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall, Savage caught the attention of players and fans during the game. It also caught the attention of Reds president Marge Schott, who had him thrown out of the booth.
“If a celebrity like Macho Man can’t go into the booth, who can?” Reds star Eric Davis said of the incident after game. “If it had been a guy from pet control, he’d have been welcome.”
