DRUMS — Cam Wisniewski fielded a line drive in center field and threw to force out a runner at second base before Selinsgrove could score the tying run, capping Mount Pleasant’s 5-4 win in the Little League Baseball 8-10-Year-Old state tournament on Wednesday.
Just as they had done a day earlier in another elimination game, the Selinsgrove all-stars responded to an opponent’s sixth-inning rally in their last at-bats. Mount Pleasant broke a 2-all tie with a trio of two-out runs. Selinsgrove then loaded the bases with no outs and scored two times before Mount Pleasant reliever Colton Pepe got out of the vise-tight jam.
Mount Pleasant survived to play again Thursday at 4 p.m. against Upper Providence, a 14-0 winner over Lionville. Selinsgrove finished the all-star season at 9-3.
Landen Conrad allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in three innings before Tommy Brown and Pepe pitched hitless ball over the final three frames. Owen Gatewood, AJ Pagana, Noah Rathfon and Reed McCabe all had singles for Selinsgrove. Gatewood, Pagana, Rathfon and Connor Lerch each scored runs.
Selinsgrove starter Trey Lydic pitched around a pair of first-inning walks and a single in the second to keep Mount Pleasant off the board into the third.
Selinsgrove loaded the bases with one out in the home second on a Rathfon single, a Tanner Ressler walk and a McCabe hit. Rathfon scored the game’s first run on a passed ball before a double play ended the inning.
Mount Pleasant tied the score with a steal of home in the third.
Selinsgrove filled the bases with one out again in the third, but Mount Pleasant cut down the go-ahead run and ended the inning with fielder’s choice plays by shortstop Tommy Brown.
An outfield error in the fourth put Mount Pleasant in front. Selinsgrove knotted it in the bottom of the inning when Pagana scored on a passed ball with two outs.
After a scoreless fifth, Mount Pleasant opened its half of the sixth with consecutive ground outs. Jack Urban and J.R. Brown both singled ahead of Pepe’s two-run double to center. Mario Mussori followed with a hard shot to the left side of the infield that was misplayed for a 5-2 lead.
Selinsgrove’s attempt to keep its season alive began with Gatewood and Lerch working consecutive walks to open the home sixth. A wild pitch moved the runners up, and a passed ball scored Gatewood to make it 5-3.
Mick Jankowski walked, and Lydic was hit by the second pitch of Pepe’s relief stint to fill the bases. Pepe recorded a strikeout with catcher J.R. Brown holding on to Pagana’s foul tip. Rathfon then took four straight balls after a first-pitch strike for a run-scoring walk that plated Lerch for a 5-4 score.
Selinsgrove put two good swings on Pepe with the tying run 60 feet away to no avail. Ressler lined an 0-2 pitch at first baseman Jack Urban, and McCabe fouled off three straight pitches before his sharp knock to center was turned for the game-ending fielder’s choice.
