The Seattle Mariners boosted their lineup on Thursday by acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia and right-hander Ashton Izzi.
Naylor brings a much-needed offensive upgrade at first base, where Luke Raley had struggled, hitting just .220 with four home runs and 18 RBIs.
Naylor, acquired by Arizona from Cleveland in the offseason, posted a strong .292 average with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs in 93 games this season.
“We are thrilled to add Josh as we make a push for the postseason,” said Mariners GM Justin Hollander. “His ability to hit for both average and power is unique, and we’re excited to not face him anymore.”
Live EventsNaylor, a career .267 hitter with 95 home runs and 402 RBIs over seven seasons, has previously played for the Padres, Guardians, and Diamondbacks.
In return, Arizona receives Garcia, Seattle’s No. 13 prospect per MLB Pipeline, who recently debuted in the majors. The 25-year-old reliever posted a 3.51 ERA over 32 minor league appearances this season. Izzi, ranked 16th in Seattle’s farm system per MLB Pipeline, went 2-4 with a 5.51 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 471/3 innings.
