The Broomall-Newtown Babe Ruth 13U squad is heading to the World Series.

BN rallied for a 4-3 win over Gibbsboro/Voorhees to capture the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship ON Friday in Old Bridge, N.J. James Hogan scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the fifth inning, then slammed the door on the mound, tossing four shutout innings in relief.

It wasn’t easy. BN fell behind 2-0 in the second, but answered with RBI knocks from Ryan Raftovich and Danny Quinn to tie it up. After falling behind again in the third, Cole Patterson laced a double to even things at 3.

Hogan and Chris DiCrecchio each had a hit for BN. On the hill, Hogan struck out eight and gave up just two hits. Patterson started and struck out five over three innings.

BN’s championship might not have been possible without the team’s heroics a day earlier. In the first showdown against Gibbsboro/Voorhees squad, Patterson ripped a walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to lift BN to an 11-10 win.

The victory sends Broomall-Newtown to the Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, N.Y. next month. It’s the program’s seventh trip to the big stage. The 13U and 15U teams both brought home titles in 2014.

Delco League

Kevin McGovern looked every bit like the league’s top arm Saturday, putting together a gem in Game 1 of Upper Darby’s semifinal series against No. 6 Aston Valley.

The lefty struck out 17 in a complete-game 6-1 win, scattering seven hits and walking just two. The former St. Louis Cardinals farmhand, who pitched last year in the Mexican League with Charros de Jalisco, lowered his season ERA to 0.76 and has 82 strikeouts in 46 innings.

Sammy Burman paced the UD offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Christian Strickland, who caught McGovern’s masterpiece, chipped in two singles and drove in a run.

Aston Valley got two hits apiece from Andrew Firko, Troy Neff and Daniel Giordano but didn’t stand much of a chance against McGovern.

The Blue Sox are defending champions, defeating the Knights in last year’s final. Game 2 of the best-of-5 series is set for Sunday, 2 p.m. at Cardinal O’Hara.

In the other semifinal:

Wayne 2, Chester 0 >> Tommy Bradley hurled six shutout frames with six punchouts as Wayne took Game 1.

Alden Mathes pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the save.

Luke Zimmerman’s sacrifice fly in the fourth gave Wayne a 1-0 lead off Chester starter Bill Ford. Steven Wells then smashed a solo homer in the sixth to make it 2-0. Ford pitched well in defeat, allowing only three hits while striking out three.

Luke Mutz doubled and scored a run for Wayne.

Ford, John Quici, Zach Frame, Jake Fallers, Diego Zerpa and Ben Ettien each had a single for Chester.

Game 2 is set for Sunday, 4 p m. at Devon Prep.
